چکیده

In this paper I develop a theory of reasons that has strong similarities to Peter Klein’s infinitism. The view I develop, Framework Reasons, upholds Klein’s principles of avoiding arbitrariness (PAA) and avoiding circularity (PAC) without requiring an infinite regress of reasons. A view of reasons that holds that the ‘reason for’ relation is constrained by PAA and PAC can avoid an infinite regress if the ‘reason for’ relation is contextual. Moreover, such a view of reasons can maintain that skepticism is false by the maintaining that there is more to epistemic justification than what can be expressed in any reasoning session. One crucial argument for Framework Reasons is that justification depends on a background of plausibility considerations. In the final section, I apply this view of reasons to Michael Bergmann’s argument any non-skeptical epistemology must embrace epistemic circularity. 1 Circularity & Arbitrariness Peter Klein has rehabilitated the regress problem for foundationalism and has championed a novel infinitist solution. The two key principles for the regress argument are the principles of avoiding circularity and avoiding arbitrariness. Both principles are supported by natural judgements. The principle of avoiding circularity is, ∗This paper was presented at Vanderbilt University for a workshop on the regress argument. I am grateful to Scott Aikin and Jeanne Peijnenburg for organizing a terrific workshop and also for putting together this volume. Also, I thank the participants for excellent feedback on this paper. Analysis of non-connected piled raft foundations (NCPRF) with cushion by finite element method

For the optimum design of Piled Raft Foundations (PRF), the concept of settlement reducer piles has been applied. However, when these piles are connected to the raft, a high stress may develop in the relatively small number of piles. Therefore, an alternative approach is to disconnect the piles from the raft forming a new system called a non-connected or disconnected piled-raft foundation (NCPR...

Analytical bending solution of fully clamped orthotropic rectangular plates resting on elastic foundations by the finite integral transform method

This study presents exact bending solution of fully clamped orthotropic rectangular plates subjected to arbitrary loads resting on elastic foundations, based on the finite integral transform method. In this method, it is not necessary to determine the deformation function because the basic governing equations of the classical plate theory for orthotropic plates have been used‌. A detailed param...

An Investigation of the Seismic Interaction of Surface Foundations and Underground Cavities Using Finite Element Method

In this study, the seismic interaction of surface foundations and underground cavities was investigated. For this purpose, a parametric study of geometric dimensions of the foundation and cavity, their location, and the effect of the interaction between surface foundations and underground cavities was evaluated. The variable parameters include the ratio of the overburden height to the foundatio...

Finite Difference Method for Biaxial and Uniaxial Buckling of Rectangular Silver Nanoplates Resting on Elastic Foundations in Thermal Environments Based on Surface Stress and Nonlocal Elasticity Theories

In this article, surface stress and nonlocal effects on the biaxial and uniaxial buckling of rectangular silver nanoplates embedded in elastic media are investigated using finite difference method (FDM). The uniform temperature change is utilized to study thermal effect. The surface energy effects are taken into account using the Gurtin-Murdoch’s theory. Using the principle of virtual work, the...

Dynamic elastic analysis of pile foundations using finite element method in the frequency domain

A quasi-three-dimensional finite element method of analysis is proposed for the dynamic response analysis of pile foundations that is computationally feasible for practical applications. The method uses a simplified three-dimensional wave equation for describing the dynamic response of the soil. The response of the pile foundation is computed directly without having to use pile–soil–pile intera...
