چکیده

• Several recent studies have shown that stimulation of the carotid sinus baroreceptors exerts a reflex, negative inotropic effect upon ventricular performance." Since it was generally accepted that the vagus nerves do not directly influence the ventricular myocardium," it was assumed that the efferent fibers of the carotido-ventricular reflex traversed sympathetic pathways exclusively. In many" or all of the experiments in these previous studies, the cervical vagus nerves were transected to preclude alterations in cardiac frequency, atrial performance, and atrio-ventricular conduction. According to recent studies," however, the assumption that the parasympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system does not directly affect the ventricles is unwarranted. Efferent vagal stimulation has been shown to depress ventricular performance." Furthermore, the vagi have been shown to mediate a depressant influence upon the left ventricle in response to carotid chemoreceptor stimulation.' Since it is well established that the cardiac vagal centers are also activated by carotid sinus baroreceptor stimulation, it was decided to determine whether the baroreceptor reflex affected myocardial performance via parasympathetic pathways to

Reflexes from the aortic baroreceptor fibers in the cervical vagus of the cat and the dog.

The baroreceptor fibers which arise from the aortic arch course centrally within the vagus nerve in the dog, and they usually follow this path in the cat. Near the origin of the superior laryngeal nerve, a separate branch of the cervical vagus (the cervical aortic nerve) arises. Previously, it was thought that this nerve contained all the important baroreceptor afferents. Aortic baroreceptor fi...

Chronic isolation of carotid sinus baroreceptor region in conscious normotensive and hypertensive rats.

We have developed a chronic technique to isolate the carotid sinus baroreceptor region in the conscious rat model. Our technique, when used in conjunction with other methods, allows for the study of the control of arterial pressure, heart rate, and cardiac output by the carotid sinus baroreceptor reflex in conscious, unrestrained rats. The performance of our technique was evaluated in two strai...

Low-pressure-sensitive baroreceptor fibers recorded from rabbit carotid sinus nerves.

Activity was recorded from physiologically identified baroreceptor or chemoreceptor fibers in carotid sinus nerves of urethane-anesthetized spontaneously breathing rabbits. A carotid sinus area was vascularly isolated so that carotid sinus pressure and perfusion medium (Locke's solution or rabbit blood) could be controlled. The cervical sympathetic, vagus, and aortic depressor nerves were bilat...

The effects of halothane on the interactions between myocardial contractility, aortic impedance, and left ventricular performance. IV. Haemodynamic responses to vagus nerve stimulation.

The effects of electrical stimulation of the vagus nerves have been studied in anaesthetized dogs, before and after bilateral interruption of the cardiac sympathetic nerves. During constant heart rates, maintained by right atrial pacing, vagus nerve stimulation caused small but significant reductions of myocardial contractility, but these were minor compared with the effects of other negative i...

Functional significance of coactivation of vagal and sympathetic cardiac nerves.

Simultaneous recording of activity in the vagal and sympathetic supplies to the heart has revealed that in reflexly and centrally evoked activity these two "antagonists" do not necessarily change action reciprocally. Coactivation occurs in chemoreceptor reflexes and related reactions, upon stretching of the sinoatrial nodal region of the right atrium and when certain hypothalamic regions are st...
