Fermionic and Majorana bound states in hybrid nanowires with non-uniform spin-orbit interaction

چکیده
We study intragap bound states in the topological phase of a Rashba nanowire in the presence of a magnetic field and with non-uniform spin orbit interaction (SOI) and proximity-induced superconductivity gap. We show that fermionic bound states (FBS) can emerge inside the proximity gap. They are localized at the junction between two wire sections characterized by different directions of the SOI vectors, and they coexist with Majorana bound states (MBS) localized at the nanowire ends. The energy of the FBS is determined by the angle between the SOI vectors and the lengthscale over which the SOI changes compared to the Fermi wavelength and the localization length. We also consider double-junctions and show that the two emerging FBSs can hybridize and form a double quantum dot-like structure inside the gap. We find explicit analytical solutions of the bound states and their energies for certain parameter regimes such as weak and strong SOI. The analytical results are confirmed and complemented by an independent numerical tight-binding model approach. Such FBS can act as quasiparticle traps and thus can have implications for topological quantum computing schemes based on braiding MBSs.

Near-zero-energy end states in topologically trivial spin-orbit coupled superconducting nanowires with a smooth confinement
A one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled nanowire with proximity-induced pairing from a nearby s-wave superconductor may be in a topological nontrivial state, in which it has a zero-energy Majorana bound state at each end. We find that the topological trivial phase may have fermionic end states with an exponentially small energy, if the confinement potential at the wire’s ends is smooth. The possib...

Recent experiments in semiconductor nanowires with a spin-orbit coupling and proximity-induced superconductivity exhibit signatures of Majorana bound states predicted to exist in the topological phase. In this Letter we predict that these nanowire systems exhibit unconventional magnetoelectric effects showing a sharp crossover behavior at the topological phase transition. We find that magnetic ...

Recent experimental efforts towards the detection of Majorana bound states have focused on creating the conditions for topological superconductivity. Here we demonstrate an alternative route, which achieves fully localised zero-energy Majorana bound states when a topologically trivial superconductor is strongly coupled to a helical normal region. Such a junction can be experimentally realised b...

We theoretically demonstrate the interplay of uniform spin-orbit coupling and uniform Zeeman magnetic field on the topological properties of one-dimensional double well nano wire which is known as Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. The system in the absence of Zeeman magnetic field and presence of uniform spin-orbit coupling exhibits topologically trivial/non–trivial insulator depending on the h...
متن کاملBound states at impurities as a probe of topological superconductivity in nanowires
Spin-orbit coupled superconductors are interesting candidates for realizing topological and potentially nonAbelian states with Majorana fermions. We argue that time-reversal broken spin-orbit coupled superconductors generically can be characterized as having subgap states that are bound to localized nonmagnetic impurities. Such bound states, which are referred to as the Shiba states, can be det...
