Fully conservative leak-proof treatment of thin solid structures immersed in compressible fluids

چکیده
We propose a novel high resolution conservative advection scheme that is suitable for thin, embedded moving solid structures. The scheme works by coupling together a high order flux-based method with a conservative semi-Lagrangian solver that is similar in spirit to that of [26], but modified to treat the cut cells and partial volumes that arise near a thin solid structure. The conservative semi-Lagrangian scheme is unconditionally stable, and so unlike previous methods no cell merging is required to compensate for the small cell volumes that arise. Furthermore, as the semi-Lagrangian scheme works via tracing characteristic curves, no special treatment is required either to enforce non-penetration through thin, moving solid structures, or to populate swept or uncovered degrees of freedom. For the flux-based solver, we use finite-difference ENO with LaxFriedrich’s diffusion (although any flux-based scheme works), and in doing so we found that a modification to the diffusion calculation leads to improved stability in its third order accurate variant. We integrate this novel hybrid advection scheme into a semi-implicit compressible flow solver, and modify the implicit pressure solver to work with cells of variable size. In addition, we propose an improvement to the semiimplicit compressible flow solver via a new method for computing a post-advected pressure. Finally, this hybrid conservative advection scheme is integrated into a semi-implicit fluid-structure solver, and a number of one-dimensional and two-dimensional examples are considered—in particular, showing that we can handle thin solid structures moving through the grid in a fully conservative manner, preventing fluid from leaking from one side of the structure to the other and without the need for cell merging or other special treatment of cut cells and partial volumes.

From Immersed Boundary Method to Immersed Continuum Method
The objective of this paper is to present an overview of the newly proposed immersed continuum method in conjunction with the traditional treatment of fluidstructure interaction problems, the immersed boundary method, the extended immersed boundary method, the immersed finite element method, and the fictitious domain method. In particular, the key aspects of the immersed continuum method in com...
متن کاملAn added-mass partition algorithm for fluid-structure interactions of compressible fluids and nonlinear solids
We describe an added-mass partitioned (AMP) algorithm for solving fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems involving inviscid compressible fluids interacting with nonlinear solids that undergo large rotations and displacements. The computational approach is a mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian scheme that makes use of deforming composite grids (DCG) to treat large changes in the geometry in an accurat...
متن کاملThree-dimensional fluid structure interaction between a compressible fluid and a fragmenting structure with a conservative immersed boundary method
In this work, we present a conservative method for three-dimensional inviscid fluid-structure interaction problems. On the fluid side, we consider an inviscid Euler fluid in conservative form. The Finite Volume method uses the OSMP high-order flux with a Strang operator directional splitting [1]. On the solid side, we consider an elastic deformable solid with possible fragmentation. We use a Di...
متن کاملSteady Thermal Stresses in a Thin Rotating Disc of Finitesimal Deformation with Mechanical Load
Seth’s transition theory is applied to the problems of thickness variation parameter in a thin rotating disc by finite deformation. Neither the yield criterion nor the associated flow rule is assumed here. The results obtained here are applicable to compressible materials. If the additional condition of incompressibility is imposed, then the expression for stresses corresponds to those arising ...
متن کاملAn algorithm for modeling the interaction of a flexible rod with a two-dimensional high-speed flow
We present an algorithm for modeling coupled dynamic interactions between very thin flexible structures immersed in a high-speed flow. The modeling approach is based on combining an Eulerian finite volume formulation for the fluid flow and a Lagrangian large-deformation formulation for the dynamic response of the structure. The coupling between the fluid and the solid response is achieved via a...
