Origin of Alternation of Generations

چکیده
Alternation of generations is a common component of all land plants, vascular and nonvascular; it does not express itself in the same manner in any other organisms. Given the other overwhelming similarities in land plant biochemistry, photosynthetic pigments and tissue organization, it seems that the easiest assumption is that they are derivatives of a common ancestor. The origin of alternation of generations is, however, unclear. Considerable evidence suggests that the land plants (both vascular and non-vascular) originated from a green algal ancestor that was haploid for most of its lifecycle, and only after gametic fusion and fertilization was it briefly diploid. The resulting zygote was the only diploid part of the life cycle, and it was immediately followed by meiosis. Thus, the zygote directly gave rise to spores and the haploid generation was re-established. The gap from four derivatives to more than four has already been bridged in some algal species by an intercalated mitotic division. But the spore producing structure remains that of the former egg in a unicellular organ. It could hardly be termed a sporangium, although it still had the same function.

Generation-biased gene expression in a bryophyte model system.
The evolution of land plants is tightly linked to the evolution of the alternation of generations. Because alternating ploidal generations share their genomes, investigating generation-biased gene expression can give insight into the evolution of life cycles in land plants. Toward this end, we describe gene expression differences associated with the alternation of isogenic sporophyte and gameto...
متن کاملAlternation of generations - unravelling the underlying molecular mechanism of a 165-year-old botanical observation.
Characteristically, land plants exhibit a life cycle with an 'alternation of generations' and thus alternate between a haploid gametophyte and a diploid sporophyte. At meiosis and fertilisation the transitions between these two ontogenies take place in distinct single stem cells. The evolutionary invention of an embryo, and thus an upright multicellular sporophyte, in the ancestor of land plant...
متن کاملO-1: Evaluation of Ethnic Patterns of Y Chromosome Microdeletions in Iranian Infertile Men with Azoospermia/Severe Oligospermia Referred to Royan Institute
Background: Microdeletions of the long arm of the chromosome Y are the most common molecular genetic cause of severe infertility in men which affect three regions of AZFa, AZFb and AZFc (Azoospermia factor). These regions contain various genes involved in spermatogenesis. The effect of ethnicity on the patterns of Y chromosome microdeletions has not been extensively studied, particulary in Iran...
متن کاملThe phonetics of quantity alternation in Washo
Stress-sensitive quantity alternation is commonplace in the Uralic languages and many of the Germanic languages in and around the Scandinavia region, but few reports have detailed similar types of alternation in Native American languages. This study offers a quantitative analysis of the complementary length alternation between tonic vowels and post-tonic consonants in two generations of speaker...
