Kyphoplasty is a technique that tries to recover the height of the fractured vertebral body and support this fracture with the injection of cement into the vertebral body. This procedure is usually performed percutaneously and requires appropriate training so as to avoid potential complications. This chapter reviews the indications, pre-operative preparation and planning, operative technique guidelines, post-operative care and rehabilitation and the complications that might appear during and after this procedure.

Prone position in balloon kyphoplasty leads to no secondary vertebral compression fractures in osteoporotic spine – a MRI study

PURPOSE Vertebral compression fractures are the most common fractures in the elderly. Long lasting pain and deformity is responsible for consecutive impairment with markedly reduced life quality, increased morbidity and mortality. The beneficial effects of balloon kyphoplasty are verified in many studies. Subsequent fracture risk is not finally clarified, cement related risks and deformity rela...

Respective contributions of vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty to the management of osteoporotic vertebral fractures.

Among individuals aged 50-80 years, 5-20% have one or more vertebral crush fractures. One-third of these patients require treatment for acute or chronic pain. Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty were introduced over the last two decades as treatments for incapacitating pain from osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Both techniques proved effective and safe in numerous retrospective and prospective stud...
