Operational radiation protection in high-energy physics accelerators: implementation of ALARA in design and operation of accelerators.

This paper considers the historical evolution of the concept of optimisation of radiation exposures, as commonly expressed by the acronym ALARA, and discusses its application to various aspects of radiation protection at high-energy accelerators.

Radiation protection at high energy electron accelerators.

An overview is presented of radiation protection at high energy electron accelerator facilities. By 'high energy' is meant the energy domain beyond a few tens of MeV, where electromagnetic showers are the determining and dominant factor for beam interactions with matter. The basic components of electron accelerators are described and their potential impact on radiation safety. The paper then co...

Application of particle accelerators in research.

Since the beginning of the past century, accelerators have started to play a fundamental role as powerful tools to discover the world around us, how the universe has evolved since the big bang and to develop fundamental instruments for everyday life. Although more than 15 000 accelerators are operating around the world only a very few of them are dedicated to fundamental research. An overview o...

Shielding high energy accelerators.

After introducing the subject or shielding high energy accelerators, point source, line-of-sight models, and in particular the Moyer Model, are discussed. Their use in the shielding of proton and electron accelerators is demonstrated and their limitations noted, especially in relation to shielding in the forward direction provided by large, flat walls. The limitations of reducing problems to th...

Neutron dose per fluence and weighting factors for use at high energy accelerators.

In June 2007, the United States Department of Energy incorporated revised values of neutron weighting factors into its occupational radiation protection regulation Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations Part 835, as part of updating its radiation dosimetry system. This has led to a reassessment of neutron radiation fields at high energy accelerators such as those at the Fermi National Accelerato...
