Remote sensing net primary productivity (NPP) estimation with the aid of GIS modelled shortwave radiation (SWR) in a Southern African Savanna

چکیده
We tested whether and to what extent a remote sensing net primary productivity (NPP) estimation model based on the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) data and GIS modelled shortwave radiation can be used to estimate NPP in a Southern African Savanna landscape. To accomplish this, we compared the results of our model with results obtained using an established rainfall-NPP regression model developed by Lieth and Whittaker (1975) for the savanna landscape, as well as the dry matter productivity (DMP) remotely sensed model. Results show that our model estimates do not significantly

Disentangling the Relationships between Net Primary Production and Precipitation in Southern Africa Savannas Using Satellite Observations from 1982 to 2010
To obtain a better understanding of the variability in net primary production (NPP) in savannas is important for the study of the global carbon cycle and the management of this particular ecosystem. Using satellite and precipitation data sets, we investigated the variations in NPP in southern African savannas from 1982 to 2010, and disentangled the relationships between NPP and precipitation by...
متن کاملEstimation and Analysis of Spatiotemporal Dynamics of the Net Primary Productivity Integrating Efficiency Model with Process Model in Karst Area
Estimates of regional net primary productivity (NPP) are useful in modeling regional and global carbon cycles, especially in karst areas. This work developed a new method to study NPP characteristics and changes in Chongqing, a typical karst area. To estimate NPP accurately, the model which integrated an ecosystem process model (CEVSA) with a light use efficiency model (GLOPEM) called GLOPEM-CE...
متن کاملEstimation of Global Vegetation Productivity from Global LAnd Surface Satellite Data
Accurately estimating vegetation productivity is important in research on terrestrial ecosystems, carbon cycles and climate change. Eight-day gross primary production (GPP) and annual net primary production (NPP) are contained in MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products (MOD17), which are considered the first operational datasets for monitoring global vegetation productivi...
متن کاملDecreasing net primary production due to drought and slight decreases in solar radiation in China from 2000 to 2012
Terrestrial ecosystems have continued to provide the critical service of slowing the atmospheric CO2 growth rate. Terrestrial net primary productivity (NPP) is thought to be a major contributing factor to this trend. Yet our ability to estimate NPP at the regional scale remains limited due to large uncertainties in the response of NPP to multiple interacting climate factors and uncertainties in...
متن کاملTrends and Variability of AVHRR-Derived NPP in India
In this paper, we estimate the trends and variability in Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR)-derived terrestrial net primary productivity (NPP) over India for the period 1982–2006. We find an increasing trend of 3.9% per decade (r = 0.78, R = 0.61) during the analysis period. A multivariate linear regression of NPP with temperature, precipitation, atmospheric CO2 concentration, soi...
