Molecular Weight, Osmotic Second Virial Coefficient, and Extinction Coefficient of Colloidal CdSe Nanocrystals

چکیده
Membrane osmometry is used to measure osmotic pressures of dilute solutions containing quasi-spherical CdSe nanocrystals covered with polymer brushes in toluene in the range 31 to 45°C. Osmotic-pressure data, as a function of nanocrystal concentration, yield the molecular weight and the osmotic second virial coefficient of the nanocrystals; the latter is related to the potential of mean force between two nanocrystal particles in dilute solution. Coupled with molecular-weight data, extinction coefficients and oscillator strengths are also obtained for nanocrystals of various sizes in toluene. CdSe nanocrystal sizes were obtained either from Transmission Electron Microscopy or from correlations between the wavelength of the absorbing peak and nanocrystal size. Osmotic-pressure data are reduced with a simple perturbed hard-sphere equation of state; the perturbation is due to long-range (London dispersion) attraction and a shortrange interaction potential. The only adjustable parameter, the strength of this short-range potential, shows two-body repulsion or attraction, depending on the sample and on solution conditions.

Why is the osmotic second virial coefficient related to protein crystallization?
A molecular basis is presented for characterizing the osmotic second virial coefficient, B 22 , of dilute protein solutions, which provides a measure of the nature of protein—protein interactions and has been shown to be correlated with crystallization behavior. Experimental measurements of the second virial coefficient of lysozyme and bovine a-chymotrypsinogen A were performed by static light ...
متن کاملPredictive crystallization of ribonuclease A via rapid screening of osmotic second virial coefficients.
Important progress has been made in recent years toward developing a molecular-level understanding of protein phase behavior in terms of the osmotic second virial coefficient, a thermodynamic parameter that characterizes pairwise protein interactions. Yet there has been little practical application of this knowledge to the field of protein crystallization, largely because of the difficult and t...
متن کاملStability of casein micelles in milk
Casein micelles in milk are proteinaceous colloidal particles and are essential for the production of flocculated and gelled products such as yogurt, cheese, and ice-cream. The colloidal stability of casein micelles is described here by a calculation of the pair potential, containing the essential contributions of brush repulsion, electrostatic repulsion, and van der Waals attraction. The param...
متن کاملReproducible, high-throughput synthesis of colloidal nanocrystals for optimization in multidimensional parameter space.
While colloidal nanocrystals hold tremendous potential for both enhancing fundamental understanding of materials scaling and enabling advanced technologies, progress in both realms can be inhibited by the limited reproducibility of traditional synthetic methods and by the difficulty of optimizing syntheses over a large number of synthetic parameters. Here, we describe an automated platform for ...
متن کاملSeeded Synthesis of CdSe/CdS Rod and Tetrapod Nanocrystals
We demonstrate a method for the synthesis of multicomponent nanostructures consisting of CdS and CdSe with rod and tetrapod morphologies. A seeded synthesis strategy is used in which spherical seeds of CdSe are prepared first using a hot-injection technique. By controlling the crystal structure of the seed to be either wurtzite or zinc-blende, the subsequent hot-injection growth of CdS off of t...
