Bacteriol. 85:137-140. 1963.-Electron micrographs of replicas of sulfur crystals before and after attack by Thiobacillus thiooxidans show that the microorganisms erode the crystal in the area immediately adjacent to the cell. When there are many cells, the entire crystal surface appears eroded.

Keto acids as growth-limiting factors in autotrophic growth of Thiobacillus thiooxidans.
When the strictly autotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus thiooxidans was grown on sulfur, keto acids accumulated in the medium until they reached an inhibitory level at which growth ceased. Much greater growth was possible if these substances were continually dialyzed out of the medium.
متن کاملOxidation of Elemental Sulfur to Sulfite by Thiobacillus thiooxidans Cells.
Thiobacillus thiooxidans cells oxidized elemental sulfur to sulfite, with 1 mol of O(2) consumption per mol of sulfur oxidized to sulfite, when the oxidation of sulfite was inhibited with 2-n-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline N-oxide.
متن کاملMicrobial Desulfurization of Malaysian Coal in Batch Process using Mixed Culture (RESEARCH NOTE)
Biodesulfurization of coal has been carried out in batch culture of single strain and mixed culture of sulfur oxidizing bacteria. The pure cultures of Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans utilized inorganic sulfur content of Malaysian coal. The chemolithotroph bacteria were able to grow on coal and metabolize the coal's sulfur content. The batch cultures of coal with 3-5 perce...
متن کاملInhibition of oxygen utilization and destruction of ubiquinone by ultraviolet irradiation of Thiobacillus thiooxidans.
Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation inhibited sulfur oxidation by cells of Thiobacillus thiooxidans. Sulfur-oxidizing activity decreased as the exposure time to UV light increased. A loss of the ability of cells of fix CO(2) paralleled the loss of sulfur-oxidizing activity. UV light photoinactivated ubiquinone purified from T. thiooxidans. The same percentage of sulfur-oxidizing activity and ubiquinon...
متن کاملCell Hydrophobicity and Sulfur Adhesion of Thiobacillus thiooxidans.
Thiobacillus thiooxidans cells became more hydrophobic but less adhesive to elemental sulfur in the presence of increasing potassium phosphate concentrations. At a fixed concentration of potassium phosphate, however, there was a peak of both cell hydrophobicity and adhesion to sulfur at around pH 5. Oxidation of sulfur by the cells was affected in a complex manner by the phosphate concentration...
