ed through use from the particular to the general class or type. Hierarchical agglomerative clustering is the most common approach, which provides intuitive similarity relationships between any one sample and the entire dataset, and is typically illustrated by a dendrogram (tree diagram) (Einax et al. 1998; McKenna 2003). The dendrogram provides a visual summary of the clustering processes, presenting a picture of the groups and their proximity, with a dramatic reduction in dimensionality of the original data. The Euclidean distance usually gives the similarity between two samples, and a distance can be represented by the difference between analytical values from the samples (Otto 1998). The Ward’s method uses an analysis of variance approach to evaluate the distances between clusters in an attempt to minimize the sum of squares of any two clusters that can be formed at

Analysis of physiochemical and microbial quality of waters of the Karkheh River in southwestern Iran using multivariate statistical methods

Rapid population growth as well as agricultural and industrial development have increased the contamination of Iranian rivers. This study utilized principal components analysis (PCA) to determine the degree of significance of qualitative parameters of water resources in the Karkheh River in southwestern Iran. Cluster analysis (CA) grouped the monitoring stations based on the water quality data ...

Case study Malaysia: Spatial water quality assessment of Juru, Kuantan and Johor River Basins using environmetric techniques

This study investigates spatial water quality assessment of selected river basins in the three different states in Malaysia. Environmetric techniques namely, cluster analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA), and discriminant analysis (DA), were applied to study the spatial variations of the most significant water quality variables in order to determine the origin of pollution sources ...

Water pollution sources assessment by multivariate statistical methods in the Tahtali Basin, Turkey

In this study, multivariate statistical methods including factor, principal component and cluster analysis were applied to surface water quality data sets obtained from the Tahtali River Basin, Turkey. Factor and principal components analysis results revealed that surface water quality was mainly controlled by agricultural uses and domestic discharges. Cluster analysis generated two clusters. B...
