On the intensity and spatial morphology of the 511 keV emission in the Milky Way

چکیده
The positron emissivity of the Galactic bulge and disk, resulting from radioactivity of SNIa, is reassessed in the light of a recent evaluation of the SNIa rate. It is found that the disk may supply more positrons than required by recent SPI/INTEGRAL observations, but the bulge (where the characteristic e annihilation line at 511 keV is in fact observed) only about 10%. It is argued that a large fraction of the disk positrons may be transported via the regular magnetic field of the Galaxy into the bulge, where they annihilate. This would increase both the bulge positron emissivity and the bulge/disk ratio, alleviating considerably the constraints imposed by INTEGRAL data analysis. We argue that the bulge/disk ratio can be considerably smaller than the values derived by the recent analysis of Knödlseder et al. (2005), if the disk positrons diffuse sufficiently away from their sources, as required by our model; this possibility could be soon tested, as data are accumulated in the SPI detectors. The success of the proposed scenario depends critically upon the, very poorly known at present, properties of the galactic magnetic field and of the propagation of low energy positrons in it.

Search for 511 keV emission in satellite galaxies of the Milky Way with INTEGRAL/SPI
Context. The positron (e) annihilation -ray signal in the Milky Way (MW) shows a puzzling morphology: a very bright bulge and a very low surface-brightness disk. A coherent explanation of the e origin, propagation through the Galaxy and subsequent annihilation in the interstellar medium has not yet been found. Tentative explanations involve es from radioactivity, X-ray binaries, and dark matter...

Observations of the Milky Way by the SPI/INTEGRAL satellite have confirmed the presence of a strong 511 KeV gamma-ray line emission from the bulge, which require an intense source of positrons in the galactic center. These observations are hard to account for by conventional astrophysical scenarios, whereas other proposals, such as light DM, face stringent constraints from the diffuse gamma-ray...
متن کاملOn the 511 keV emission line of positron annihilation in the Milky Way
I review our current understanding of positron sources in the Galaxy, on the basis of the reported properties of the observed 511 keV annihilation line. It is argued here that most of the disk positrons propagate away fom the disk (due to the low density environment) and the resulting low surface brightness annihilation emission is currently undetectable by SPI/INTEGRAL. It is also argued that ...

Observations of a strong and extended positron-electron annihilation line emission in the Galactic center (GC) region by the SPI/INTEGRAL are challenging to the existing models of positron sources in the Galaxy. In this paper, we study the possibility that pulsar winds from a millisecond pulsar population in the GC produce the 511 keV line. Our preliminary estimations predict that the e annihil...

Introduction: The advent of dual-modality PET/CT scanners has revolutionized clinical oncology by improving lesion localization and facilitating treatment planning for radiotherapy. In addition, the use of CT images for CT-based attenuation correction (CTAC) decreases the overall scanning time and creates a noise-free attenuation map (6map). CTAC methods include scaling, s...
