چکیده

This paper presents a computational model for simulating the behavior of a jazz bass player during live performance. In jazz performance there is a strikingly large gap between the actually played music and the instructions given in a chord grid. Making use of several artificial intelligence paradigms, we try to bridge this gap by considering the two critical points: the experience acquired by musicians and its use with respect to the evolving context of live improvisation [Ramalho & Ganascia 94b]. In previous papers we have presented a model of an improvising bass player from an AI perspective, emphasizing the underlying problem solving method. Since we will here be focusing on the interaction model, our starting point will be a formulation of our model in terms of the behavioral (or abstract) automata theory.

It Must Be Louis ’cause Miles Don’t Shake like That: towards Identifying Jazz Trumpeters by Vibrato

We at Rutgers have a special interest in jazz performer identification. Rutgers is the home of the Institute for Jazz Studies, which houses one of the largest collection of jazz sound recordings. Automated performer identification would be an important tool for the curators of the collection. Our focus, therefore, has been on the identification of jazz instrumentalists, specifically jazz trumpe...

The Tight-interlocked Rhythm Section: Production and Perception of Synchronisation in Jazz Trio Performance

This study investigates the production and perception of timing, synchronisation and dynamics in jazz trio performances. In a production experiment, six trio combinations of one saxophonist, two bassists, and three drummers were recorded while they performed three popular jazz songs. Onset timing and dynamics of each performer were extracted and analysed. Results showed that the tempo was signi...

A cybernetic model approach for free jazz improvisations

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to better understand communication between musicians in a free jazz improvisation in comparison to traditional jazz. Design/methodology/approach – A cybernetic informative feedback model was used to study communication between musicians for free jazz. The conceptual model consists of the ears as sensors, an auditory analysis stage to convert the acoustic s...

Artificially intelligent accompaniment using Hidden Markov Models to model musical structure

Background in Music Performance and Accompaniment. Musical accompanists may not always be available during practice, or the available accompanist may not have the technical ability necessary. As a solution to this problem, many musicians practise with pre-recorded accompaniment. Such an accompaniment is fixed and does not interact with the musician’s playing: the musician must adapt their perfo...

Score Following: An Artificially Intelligent Musical Accompanist

Score Following is the process by which a musician can be tracked through their performance of a piece, for the purpose of accompanying the musician with the appropriate notes. This tracking is done by following the progress of the musician through the score (written music) of the piece, using observations of the notes they are playing. Artificially intelligent musical accompaniment is where a ...
