چکیده

Transient x-ray diffraction is used to record time-resolved information about the shock compression of materials. This technique has been applied on Nova shock experiments driven using a hohlraum x-ray drive. Data were recorded from the shock release at the free surface of a Si crystal, as well as from Si at an embedded ablator/Si interface. Modeling has been done to simulate the diffraction data incorporating the strained crystal rocking curves and Bragg diffraction efficiencies. Examples of the data and post-processed simulations are presented. © 1999 American Institute of Physics. @S0034-6748~99!62601-6#

Anomalous elastic response of silicon to uniaxial shock compression on nanosecond time scales.

We have used x-ray diffraction with subnanosecond temporal resolution to measure the lattice parameters of orthogonal planes in shock compressed single crystals of silicon (Si) and copper (Cu). Despite uniaxial compression along the (400) direction of Si reducing the lattice spacing by nearly 11%, no observable changes occur in planes with normals orthogonal to the shock propagation direction. ...

Real-time, high-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements on shocked crystals at a synchrotron facility.

The Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory was used to obtain real-time, high-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements to determine the microscopic response of shock-compressed single crystals. Disk shaped samples were subjected to plane shock wave compression by impacting them with half-inch diameter, flat-faced projectiles. The projectiles were accelerated to velocities ...

X-ray diffraction from shock-loaded polycrystals.

X-ray diffraction was demonstrated from shock-compressed polycrystalline metals on nanosecond time scales. Laser ablation was used to induce shock waves in polycrystalline foils of Be, 25-125 microm thick. A second laser pulse was used to generate a plasma x-ray source by irradiation of a Ti foil. The x-ray source was collimated to produce a beam of controllable diameter, which was directed at ...

Shock Wave Compression of NaCl Single Crystals observed by Flash-X-Ray Diffraction

Flash-x-ray-diffraction patterns (FXD) with an exposure time of 4 ns of XaCl single crystals compressed bv plane shock waves are obtained a t pressures of about 30 kbar. From the diffraction patterns the compression is determined and compared with Hugoniot data. During shock load the lattice shows an uniaxial compression. While in case of measurements a t the free surface an observation time of...

Direct Observation of Melting in Shock-Compressed Bismuth With Femtosecond X-ray Diffraction.

The melting of bismuth in response to shock compression has been studied using in situ femtosecond x-ray diffraction at an x-ray free electron laser. Both solid-solid and solid-liquid phase transitions are documented using changes in discrete diffraction peaks and the emergence of broad, liquid scattering upon release from shock pressures up to 14 GPa. The transformation from the solid state to...
