چکیده

The deepest region of the ROSAT All−Sky Survey, at the North Ecliptic Pole, has been studied to produce a complete and unbiased X-ray selected sample of clusters of galaxies. This sample is used to investigate the nature of cluster evolution and explore potential implications for large-scale structure models. The survey is 99.6% optically identified. Spectroscopic redshifts have been measured for all the extragalactic identifications. In this Letter, first results on cluster evolution are presented based on a comparison between the number of the observed clusters in the North Ecliptic Pole survey and the number of expected clusters assuming no-evolution models. At z > 0.3 there is a deficit of clusters with respect to the local universe which is significant at > 4.7σ. The evolution appears to commence at L0.5−2.0 > 1.8× 10 44 erg s in our data. The negative evolution goes in the same direction as the original EMSS result, the results from the 160 deg survey by Vikhlinin et al. (1998) and the recent results from the RDCS (Rosati et al. 2000). At lower redshifts there is no evidence for evolution, a result in agreement with these and other cluster surveys. Large-Scale Structure in the ROSAT North Ecliptic Pole Survey

We have used the ROSAT All-Sky Survey around the North Ecliptic Pole to construct a complete sample of galaxy clusters. The deep and contiguous nature of the survey affords us the opportunity to examine large-scale structure in the Universe on scales of hundreds of megaparsecs. We have identified over 99% of the 446 X-ray sources in the survey area. The cluster sample consists of 65 objects wit...

A Cluster Deficit in the ROSAT NEP Survey

We have used data from the deepest region of the ROSAT All−Sky Survey, the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) region, to produce a complete and unbiased X−ray selected sample of distant clusters to understand the nature of cluster evolution and determine implications for large scale structure models. In this contribution results are presented from a comparison between the number of the observed clusters...

Evolution of X - ray Luminous Clusters from z = 0 . 3 to z = 0 . 8

Observations of the highest redshift clusters provide the longest lever arm in the attempt to evaluate the evolution of their bulk properties. I present the most recent results on galaxy cluster evolution based on data from the ROSAT North Ecliptic Pole survey. At z > 0.3 there is a deficit of clusters with respect to the local universe which is significant at > 4.7σ. The evolution appears to b...

The North Ecliptic Pole Supercluster

We have used the ROSAT All-Sky Survey to detect a known supercluster at z = 0.087 in the North Ecliptic Pole region. The X-ray data greatly improve our understanding of this supercluster’s characteristics, approximately doubling our knowledge of the structure’s spatial extent and tripling the cluster/group membership compared to the optical discovery data. The supercluster is a rich structure c...

Astronomy and Astrophysics a Wide Field Survey at the Northern Ecliptic Pole I: Number Counts and Angular Correlation Functions in K

We present the results from a multi colour survey performed at the Northern Ecliptic Pole (NEP). The survey is designed to identify the counterparts of faint sources from the ROSAT All Sky Survey and the IRAS survey and to study their optical/near-infrared properties. We observed the central square degree around the NEP in the optical bands B J and R and in the near-infrared band K. A shallower...
