چکیده

In 1997, a highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus (H5N1) in Hong Kong caused death in 6 of 18 infected persons.1 Subsequent outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza in several other countries indicated that the virus may be more widely established among the bird population and the environment than previously thought. Human deaths from avian influenza infections have been reported in Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and China. Fortunately, there was no evidence of large-scale human-to-human transmission of the virus. To date only two classes of anti-influenza drugs (amantadine and its derivatives and neuraminidase inhibitors) have been clinically used, but their use may result in the emergence of resistant variants.2 Phytochemicals such as phenolic compounds, flavonoids3,4 and proteins such as cyanovirin-N5 from natural sources may have significant inhibitory effects on influenza A viruses. Our laboratory has isolated, purified, experimentally tested, and identified more than 30 potent antiviral herbal extracts and active compounds that significantly inhibit various human viruses. Three proteins isolated from Pandanus amaryllifolius (PYM2), Narcissus tazett (NTL), and Polygonatum odoratum (POL) were identified to have most prominent anti-H5N1 potency. Their antiviral efficacy and potential as a product was investigated. K e y M e s s a g e s

The Combined Use of rHVT-H5 and rHVT-F Vector Vaccines in the Hatchery Enhances Immunity against Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 and Velogenic Newcastle Disease Viral Infections in Commercial Chickens

Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 and Newcastle disease viral infections cause severe illness in chickens and vaccination is a strategic tool of controlling these diseases. Hence, this study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of using both recombinant herpesvirus of turkey (rHVT-H5 and rHVT-F) vector vaccines at day-old, in the hatchery, under field conditions. Vaccinated chickens were...

Antiviral activity of crude extracts of Eugenia jambolana Lam. against highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) virus.

Crude extracts of leaves and bark of E. jambolana were tested for antiviral activity against highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (H5N1) by CPE reduction assay in three different layouts to elucidate virucidal, post-exposure and preexposure antiviral activity of the extracts. The cold and hot aqueous extracts of bark and hot aqueous extract of leaves of E. jambolana showed significant viruci...

Immunity Against Avian Influenza Viruspanax Ginseng Polysaccharide (GPS) Can Improve Immunity Against H9N2 Avian Influenza Virus in Chickens

The humoral immunization potential of panax ginseng polysaccharide (GPS) against H9N2 avian influenza virus (H9N2 AIV) in chickens was investigated. The effects of GPS treatment before and during H9N2 AIV infection were determined in chicken embryo fibroblast (CEF) by MTT (3(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 3-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assays and quantitative RT-PCR analysis of MHC and cytokine...

The effect of the extracts of Echinacea purpurea and Sambucus nigra (black elderberry) on virus shedding in H9N2 avian influenza infected chickens

Previous studies have shown antiviral effect of Echinacea and elderberry preparations against human influenza viruses in vitro. To investigate the in vivo antiviral effect of these herbs on avian H9N2 influenza virus, amantadine and two standardized commercial extracts of Echinacea purpurea (EF) and Sambucus nigra (SAM) were used in broiler chickens infected with H9N2 strain of the virus. EF, S...

Mortality of wild swans associated with naturally infection with highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus in Iran

In the February 2006 in two wetlands in northern Iran, the mortality among wild swans was observed. Paralysis was the most prominent feature of the disease. Histologically, diffused necrosis of acinar cells in pancreas, degeneration and necrosis of some neurons in central nervous system (CNS), sever necrotic and hemorrhagic enteritis, foci of haemorrahge and myocardial cell necrosis in the he...
