Parsing in OT*

چکیده

0. Abstract In this paper, I propose to implement syllabification in OT as a parser. I propose several innovations that result in a finite and small candidate set: i) MAX and DEP violations are not hypothesized by the parser, ii) candidates are encoded locally, and iii) EVAL is applied constraint by constraint. The parser is implemented in Prolog, and has a number of desirable consequences. First, it runs and thus provides an existence proof that syllabification can be implemented in OT. Second, GEN is implemented as a finite-state transducer. Third, the implementation makes an exponential savings in processing time over previous approaches. Fourth, the implementation suggests some particular reformulations of some of the benchmark constraints in the OT arsenal, e.g. *COMPLEX, PARSE, ONSET, and NOCODA. Finally, the implementation is compared with various other proposals in the literature.

Optimality Theory: Universal Grammar, Learning and Parsing Algorithms, and Connectionist Foundations (Abstract)

We present a recently proposed theory of grammar, Optimality Theory (OT; Prince & Smolensky 1991, 1993). The principles of OT derive in large part from the high-level principles governing computation in connectionist networks. The talk proceeds as follows: (1) we summarize OT and its applications to UG. The we present (2) learning and (3) parsing algorithms for OT. Finally, (4) we show how cruc...

Formal and Empirical Arguments Concerning Phonological Acquisition

This paper draws on the generative literature in phonological acquisition, as well as on the work of phoneticians and psycholinguists, in an attempt to propose a unified view of the acquisition of phonological competence. We start with an examination of the Optimality Theoretic (OT) account of the well-known comprehension/production dilemma in child language presented in Smolensky (1996ab, henc...

بررسی مقایسه‌ای تأثیر برچسب‌زنی مقولات دستوری بر تجزیه در پردازش خودکار زبان فارسی

In this paper, the role of Part-of-Speech (POS) tagging for parsing in automatic processing of the Persian language is studied. To this end, the impact of the quality of POS tagging as well as the impact of the quantity of information available in the POS tags on parsing are studied. To reach the goals, three parsing scenarios are proposed and compared. In the first scenario, the parser assigns...

An improved joint model: POS tagging and dependency parsing

Dependency parsing is a way of syntactic parsing and a natural language that automatically analyzes the dependency structure of sentences, and the input for each sentence creates a dependency graph. Part-Of-Speech (POS) tagging is a prerequisite for dependency parsing. Generally, dependency parsers do the POS tagging task along with dependency parsing in a pipeline mode. Unfortunately, in pipel...

The Logic of Optimality Theory

This paper is an attempt to determine the underpinnings of Optimality Theory (henceforth OT; Prince and Smolensky, 1993; McCarthy and Prince, 1993), and what logic might have to do with it.1 This is important because, without this kind of work, very strange misunderstandings of the theory crop up. The work reported here is preliminary, but nothing of this sort has previously been attempted for ...
