Some aspects of placental function.

چکیده
THE PERINATAL Mortality Survey has shown that deaths due to anoxia during and before labour account for 10.5 in every 1,000 deliveries (Butler and Bonham, 1963). It is believed that the majority of these intrauterine deaths are due to an abnormality of the placenta (Potter, 1961). Although in some such cases an anatomical lesion of the placenta may be found, as for example, in retroplacental haemorrhage, placental infarction and massive thrombosis of the placental blood vessels, in most cases there is no anatomical lesion in the face of obvious physiological failure. It is because of this that an important obstetrical research problem at the present time is the development of a placental function test (Corner, 1964). Such a study must be based on an understanding of the constitution of normal placental activity, and the following discusses some of the present-day knowledge of those aspects of the structure and function of the placenta which are related to transport of naturally occurring substances. Whilst many instructive data have resulted from observations made on humans, the possible risk to mother and foetus precludes the employment of a number of useful experimental techniques, and so much information has been gained from the use of other animals. From such studies it is possible to conclude that the foetus is a highly independent organism physiologically. This is probably mediated in the placenta whose cells are not passively equilibrating with those of the mother, but are metabolically very active. However, there still remains doubt as to the actual anatomical location of the placental barrier.

The impact of COVID-19 during pregnancy on fetal brain development
The development of the brain as the most complex structure of the human body is a long process that begins in the third week of pregnancy and continues until adulthood and even until the end of life (1). Human brain myelination begins one to two months before birth in the visual system and eventually lasts until the age of two in other sensory systems and then the motor systems (4). Processes a...
متن کاملA study of the kinds of placental collegens from Iranian women to determine the standard rate of placental collagen
Background: Alteration in polymorphism of tissue collagens has been reported in association with some genetic and metabolic disorders. These alterations can be estimated quantitatively by measuring alpha-chain monomers derived from the polymeric form of collagens following treatment with sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). We studied the rate of placental colla...

Lipoxygenase(LOX) catalyzes irreversible transfer of oxygen molecule to Arachidonic and Linoleic acid to produce 13 Hydroproxy Octadecadienoic acid. Recent studies showed the involvement of Lipoxygenase products, leukotrienes, in inflammations and Lipoxygenase pathways acts as mediators of early inflammatory events in atherosclerosis. The aim of the present study was purification and characteri...
متن کاملThe Reaction of Placental GRP78 Protein with Sera from Women with Multiple Sclerosis
Background: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) with four different types is one of the well studied autoimmune diseases of the central nervous system. Generally, two-thirds of MS patients are females who are at risk of pregnancy-related complications. Inappropriate responses of mother’s immune system, such as antibody production against placental proteins, may lead to pregnancy-related disorders. The as...
متن کاملNew aspects in placental drug transfer.
The human placenta is the interface between the mother and fetus in the uterus. Until recently it was generally believed that the uterus provides a protective environment for the fetus. It is now accepted that any chemical substance, including any therapeutic agent, administered to a mother is able to permeate across the placental barrier. Unfortunately, the placental transfer of substances and...
