چکیده
Polarized light is the light in which all the rays vibrate in one plane. A polarizing microscope has two disk accessories. They are made up of polarizing plastic that allows light vibrating in one plane to pass. One of them is called a polarizer (placed below the condenser). Another similar disc is placed in the top part of the microscope and cuts off all the light vibrating in a perpendicular plane. This disc is called analyzer. The placement of the discs is such that they allow light vibrating in planes perpendicular to each other. Hence when both the Figure 1: Principle of polarizing microscopy disks are in place no light can pass on to the eyepieces. Hence through the eyepieces only dark background is seen unless Foreign body (ies) a doubly refractile object is placed in the path of polarized On polariscopic examination different foreign bodies have light, in which case, the doubly refractile object appears characteristic appearance. They can be found amidst foreign illuminated against a dark background [Figure 1]. body granulomas (both allergic and non-allergic type) and most commonly within the multinucleated giant cells. Usually organic and inorganic substances with rigid yet Various foreign bodies can be identified on the basis of repeatable structure like crystals, sand, talc, wood, amyloid and other fibrillary structures are seen on polarized light microscopy. Certain foreign bodies can be detected on routine hematoxylin and eosin staining (H and E) while special stains are required for metabolic or deposition disorders.

O-10: A Marked Animal-Vegetal Polarity in The Localization of Na+,K+-ATPase Activity and Its Down-Regulation Following Progesterone-Induced Maturation
Background: Polarized cells are key to the process of differentiation. Xenopus oocyte is a polarized cell that has complete blue-print to differentiate 3 germ layers following fertilization, as key determinant molecules (Proteins and RNAs) are asymmetrically localized. The objective of this work was to localize Na+, K+-ATPase activity along animal-vegetal axis of polarized Xenopus oocyte and fo...
متن کاملPolarized light microscopy of hair shafts aids in the differential diagnosis of Chédiak-Higashi and Griscelli-Prunieras syndromes.
PURPOSE To study and compare the appearance of hairs from patients with Chédiak-Higashi and Griscelli-Prunieras syndromes under light and polarized light microscopy. METHOD Hairs from 2 Chédiak-Higashi and 2 Griscelli-Prunieras patients were obtained and examined under normal and polarized light microscopy. RESULTS Under light microscopy, hairs from Chédiak-Higashi patients presented evenly...
متن کاملMalaria Diagnosis Using a Mobile Phone Polarized Microscope
Malaria remains a major global health burden, and new methods for low-cost, high-sensitivity, diagnosis are essential, particularly in remote areas with low-resource around the world. In this paper, a cost effective, optical cell-phone based transmission polarized light microscope system is presented for imaging the malaria pigment known as hemozoin. It can be difficult to determine the presenc...
متن کاملO-20: Slow-Freezing-Induced Changes of Birefringent Structures in Human Oocytes Are Related to Responsiveness to Ovulation Induction
Background: The slow-freezing method is one of the most popular techniques to freeze human oocytes and it is also used in routine in vitro-fertilization (IVF) programs, particularly in those countries where embryo freezing is not allowed. Slow-freezing damages some of the structures of the egg, among which the meiotic spindle (MS) and the zona pellucida (ZP). Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) pe...

Purpose: The objective for this study is to investigate the morphology and ultrastructure of mouse endometrial epithelial cell monolayer cultured on matrigel in dual-chambered system as an in vitro mouse endometrial epithelial cell culture model that mimics structural and functional properties of the endometrial epithelium in vivo. Materials and Methods: Mouse endometrial epithelial cells were...
متن کاملA Simplified, Low-Cost Method for Polarized Light Microscopy
Malaria pigment is an intracellular inclusion body that appears in blood and tissue specimens on microscopic examination and can help in establishing the diagnosis of malaria. In simple light microscopy, it can be difficult to discern from cellular background and artifacts. It has long been known that if polarized light microscopy is used, malaria pigment can be much easier to distinguish. Howe...
