Shared Desktop: A Collaborative Tool for Sharing 3-D Applications among Different Window Systems

چکیده
Vol. 9 No. 3 1997 An advanced product development effort undertaken by graphics engineers in the DIGITAL Workstations Group led to the creation of a new software application called Shared Desktop. One project goal was to enable collaboration among users of three-dimensional (3-D) graphics workstations that run either the UNIX or the Windows NT operating system. Another goal was to allow these users to access the high-performance 3-D capabilities of their office workstations from their laptop computers or home-based personal computers (PCs) that run the Windows 95 system and do not have 3-D graphics hardware. This goal necessitated a cross–operating-system application that could efficiently and effectively handle 3-D graphics in real time and share these graphics with machines such as laptop computers and PCs. In this paper, we begin with a discussion of the software currently available for computer collaboration. We then discuss the development of the Shared Desktop application, focusing on the user interface, protocol splitting, screen capture and data handling, and dissimilar frame buffers. We conclude with sections on additional uses and future directions of the Shared Desktop product.

Collaborative Sharing of Windows between MacOS X , the X Window System and Windows ∗
This paper investigates how one best can share windows between many different computers in a collaborative, cross platform environment. Current collaborative solutions offering users shared application access are limited in that they either share an entire desktop, or that sharing is built into the collaborative application. We present an architecture of a system allowing windows on MacOS X to ...
متن کاملThe Grid Shared Desktop: a Bootstrapping Environment for Collaboration
The paradigm shift from an information sharing infrastructure (i.e., the Web) to a resource sharing infrastructure (i.e., the Grid) has boosted the development of a new generation of online services. In particular, Grid services are stateful, dynamic and operate in a secure environment. Therefore they offer capabilities that are essential to remote collaboration. In this paper, we tackle the pr...
متن کاملAugmented Reality Videoconferencing for Collaborative Work
This paper describes an Augmented Reality videoconference system, which is a novel remote collaboration tool combining a desktop-based AR system and a videoconference module. The novelty of our system is the combination of these tools with AR applications superimposed on live video background displaying the conference parties’ real environment, merging the advantages of the natural face-to-face...
متن کاملCyberLiveApp: A secure sharing and migration approach for live virtual desktop applications in a cloud environment
In recent years we have witnessed the rapid advent of cloud computing, in which the remote software is delivered as a service and accessed by users using a thin client over the Internet. In particular, the traditional desktop application can execute in the remote virtual machines without re-architecture providing a personal desktop experience to users through remote display technologies. Howeve...
متن کاملWhat You See Is What I Want: Experiences With The Virtual X Shared Window System
There has been considerable interest in the problems associated with real-time, multi-user interfaces for computer supported collaborative work. This paper describes our experiences in designing and implementing Virtual X, a real-time window sharing system based on the X network protocol. The Virtual X environment provides a mechanism for the collaborative use of unmodi ed X applications, even ...
