Aberration of the Cosmic Microwave Background

چکیده

The motion of the solar system barycenter with respect to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) induces a very large apparent dipole component into the CMB brightness map at the 3 mK level. In this Letter we discuss another kinematic effect of our motion through the CMB: the small shift in apparent angular positions due to the aberration of light. The aberration angles are only of order β ≃ 0.001, but this leads to a potentially measurable compression (expansion) of the spatial scale in the hemisphere toward (away from) our motion through the CMB. In turn, this will shift the peaks in the acoustic power spectrum of the CMB by a factor of order 1 ± β. For current CMB missions, and even those in the foreseeable future, this effect is small, but should be taken into account. In principle, if the acoustic peak locations were not limited by sampling noise (i.e., the cosmic variance), this effect could be used to determine the cosmic contribution to the dipole term. Clusters of galaxies in the microwave band: influence of the motion of the Solar System

In this work we consider the changes of the SZ cluster brightness, flux and number counts induced by the motion of the Solar System with respect to the frame defined by the cosmic microwave background (CMB). These changes are connected with the Doppler effect and aberration and exhibit a strong spectral and spatial dependence. The correction to the SZ cluster brightness and flux has an amplitud...

Observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background

The properties of the cosmic microwave background radiation provide unique constraints on cosmological models, i.e. on the content, history, and evolution of the Universe. I discuss the latest measurements of the spectral and spatial properties of the cosmic microwave background radiation. Recent measurements from NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite, and from balloon-borne and gr...

Planck 2013 results. XXVII. Doppler boosting of the CMB: Eppur si muove⋆

Our velocity relative to the rest frame of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) generates a dipole temperature anisotropy on the sky which has been well measured for more than 30 years, and has an accepted amplitude of v/c = 1.23 × 10−3, or v = 369 km s−1. In addition to this signal generated by Doppler boosting of the CMB monopole, our motion also modulates and aberrates the CMB temperature f...
