چکیده

We describe a method for the rearing of the oligophagous herbivore Hadena bicruris, and its gregarious koinobiont endoparasitoid Microplitis tristis under laboratory conditions. With flowers from the host food plant Silene latifolia available, female moths lay on average 414 eggs during their lifetime, starting at day 3 after eggression and with a peak number per night on day 8. Caterpillars can be reared with 56 % survival on an artificial diet. Individually mated parasitoids succesfully parsitised individually presented L4 caterpillars. Clutch size of the reared parasitoids (13.4) is lower than clutch sizes found in natural populations (17.7). Age of the females might be an important factor influencing clutch size. Diapause is differently induced in the host and in the parasitoid. Under long day conditions low night temperature induces diapause in hosts but not in prasitoids. Under short day conditions both species enter diapause at low night temperature.

Three new species of parasitic wasps (Braconidae: Microgastrinae) from southern India are described and illustrated. Glyptapanteles clanisae sp. nov., a remarkable gregarious endoparasitoid, was bred from the caterpillar of Clanis phalaris Cramer (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) on the host plant Pongamia pinnata (L.) (Leguminosae) along with a hyperparasitoid, Eurytoma sp. (Eurytomidae). Glyptapantel...

Host age preference of Microplitis mediator (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), an endoparasitoid of Mythimna separata (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Microplitis mediator (Haliday) is a solitary endoparasitoid of larvae of the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) and the oriental armyworm, Mythimna = Leucania separata (Walker). The preference and suitability of different instars of M. separata for M. mediator were determined under laboratory conditions at a constant temperature of 26 ± 1 C, 65 ± 5% RH and L14:D10 photoperiod. The s...

Distribution and colonisation ability of three parasitoids and their herbivorous host in a fragmented landscape

Habitat fragmentation can disrupt communities of interacting species even if only some of the species are directly affected by fragmentation. For instance, if parasitoids disperse less well than their herbivorous hosts, habitat fragmentation may lead to higher herbivory in isolated plant patches due to the absence of the third trophic level. Community-level studies suggest that parasitoids tend...
