Polydispersity and scaling in linear polymer condensates

چکیده

2014 We consider a linear polymer melt where the chains are made by condensation of bifunctional monomers. In the very large distribution of molecular weights that is obtained one may distinguish typical and very large chains with different behaviours. Screening is effective in the former, which act as a (good) solvent for the latter. The cross-over molecular weight N * between the two classes is a function of the weight average molecular weight Nw. Within a Flory approach, we find N* ~ N2w. Chains much larger than N* are swollen. Typical chains have the same behaviour as in a monodispersed melt J. Physique 45 (1984) 151-155 JANVIER 1984, Classification Physics Abstracts 05.40 05.90

Renormalized field theory of polymer solutions : extension to general polydispersity

2014 We extend the renormalization group approach to polymer solutions of arbitrary chain length distribution (polydispersity). In the excluded volume limit polydispersity can be classified as neither relevant, irrelevant, nor marginal. The qualitative properties (the exponents) are not influenced by polydispersity. The quantitative results (scaling functions) are influenced, however, and our m...

0 Polydisperse star polymer solutions

We analyze the effect of polydispersity in the arm number on the effective interactions , structural correlations and the phase behavior of star polymers in a good solvent. The effective interaction potential between two star polymers with different arm numbers is derived using scaling theory. The resulting expression is tested against monomer-resolved molecular dynamics simulations. We find th...

Effect of polymer chain-length polydispersity on the phase behavior of model athermal mixtures of colloids and flexible self-excluding polymers

The effect of polymer polydispersity on the fluid–fluid demixing of an athermal mixture of colloids and self-excluding polymers is analysed with the first-order thermodynamic perturbation theory (TPT1) of Wertheim. The colloidal particles and the segments making up the polymer chains are modeled as hard spheres of different diameters. The polydispersity of the polymer is represented by a distri...

Review: mass spectrometry of step-growth polymers.

For at least two decades different mass spectrometric techniques have been applied for polymer analysis, including the qualitative determination of chemical compositions, end group identification, functionality type distribution and the determination of the cyclisation extend at each degree of polymerisation. Molecular weights exceeding 100 KDa are provable by MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry. Furth...

Stability of the double gyroid phase to nanoparticle polydispersity in polymer-tethered nanosphere systems†

Recent simulations predict that aggregating nanospheres functionalized with polymer ‘‘tethers’’ can self-assemble to form the double gyroid (DG) phase seen in block copolymer and surfactant systems. Within the struts of the gyroid, the nanoparticles pack in icosahedral motifs, stabilizing the gyroid phase in a small region of the phase diagram. Here, we study the impact of nanoparticle size pol...
