چکیده

Scaling behaviour is observed in many elds and its ubiquity has been amply witnessed in telecommunications traac data. Whereas the notion of scaling can be attached to diierent features such as self-similarity, long-range dependence or (multi-)fractality, it leads in all cases to challenging problems in terms of analysis, estimation and synthesis. These issues are addressed here by using the naturally suited multiresolution approach, based on the wavelet transform, which allows the elaboration of powerful and versatile tools within a general and uniied framework. The proposed methods are discussed in detail with respect to their rationale, statistical performance, computational eeciency, robustness, relation with other existing approaches, and use in practice. Theoretical claims are supported by both numerical simulations and selected examples of traac data. The presence of scaling behaviour in telecommunications traac is striking not only in its ubiquity, appearing in almost every kind of packet data, but also in the wide range of scales over which the scaling holds (see e.g. 32], 14], 54]). It is rare indeed that a physical phenomenon obeys a consistent law over so many orders of magnitude. This may well extend further, as increases in network bandwidth over time progressively`reveal' higher scales. While the presence of scaling is now well established, its impact on teletraf-c issues and network performance is still the subject of some confusion and uncertainty. Why is scaling in traac important for networking? It is clear, as far as modelling of the traac itself is concerned, that a feature as prominent as scaling should be built into models at a fundamental level, if these are to be both accurate and parsimonious. Scaling, therefore, has immediate implications for the choice of classes of traac models, and consequently on the choice, and subsequent estimation, of model parameters. Such estimation is required for initial model veriication, for tting purposes, as well as for traac monitoring. Traac modelling however, does not occur in isolation but in the context of performance issues. Depending on the performance metric of interest, and the model of the network element in question, the impact and therefore the relevance of scaling behaviour will vary. As a simple example, it is known that in certain innnite buuer uid queues fed by long range dependent (LRD) On/OO sources, that the stationary queueing distribution has innnite mean, a radically non-classical result. Such innnite moments disappear however if the buuer is nite, intuitively because a nite …

Scaling Phenomena from Non-Linear Evolution in High Energy DIS

The numerical solutions of the non-linear evolution equation are shown to display the “geometric” scaling recently discovered in the experimental data. The phenomena hold both for proton and nucleus targets for all x below 10−2 and 0.25GeV2 ≤ Q2 ≤ 2.5 × 103 GeV2. The scaling is practically exact (few percent error) in the saturation region. In addition, an approximate scaling is found in the va...

Fluctuations and scaling in aggregation phenomena

Many physical phenomena are governed by the aggregation of material. Such processes have been studied in earnest since the early parts of this century and continue to attract considerable interest within areas that range from astrophysics 2 to biology. The most powerful methods for analyzing these phenomena are based on general scaling arguments 5 applied to the number and size distribut...

Steps Toward Large-scale Solar Image Data Analysis to Differentiate Solar Phenomena

We detail the investigation of the first application of several dissimilarity measures for large-scale solar image data analysis. Using a solar-domain-specific benchmark dataset that contains multiple types of phenomena, we analyzed combinations of image parameters with different dissimilarity measures in order to determine which combinations will allow us to differentiate among the multiple so...

Scaling, universality, and renormalization: Three pillars of modern critical phenomena

This brief overview is designed to introduce some of the advances that have occurred in our understanding of phase transitions and critical phenomena. The presentation is organized around three simple questions: (i) What are the basic phenomena under consideration? (ii) Why do we care? (iii) What do we actually do? To answer the third question, the author shall briefly review scaling, universal...

Ja n 20 05 Universal scaling behavior of non - equilibrium phase transitions Sven Lübeck

Non-equilibrium critical phenomena have attracted a lot of research interest in the recent decades. Similar to equilibrium critical phenomena, the concept of universality remains the major tool to order the great variety of non-equilibrium phase transitions systematically. All systems belonging to a given universality class share the same set of critical exponents, and certain scaling functions...

Effects of Far- and Near-Field Multiple Earthquakes on the RC SDOF Fragility Curves Using Different First Shock Scaling Methods

Typically, to study the effects of consecutive earthquakes, it is necessary to consider definite intensity levels of the first shock. Methods commonly used to define intensity involve scaling the first shock to a specified maximum interstorey drift. In this study the structure’s predefined elastic spectral acceleration caused by the first shock is also considered for scaling. This study aims to...
