Clay Minerals and Catalysis

چکیده
More than half a century ago, Irish physicist John Desmond Bernal and Swiss geochemist Victor M. Goldschmidt independently proposed that clay minerals may have played an important role in prebiotic synthesis (Bernal 1949; Goldschmidt 1952). I concur that mineral catalysis must have had a central role in prebiotic synthesis because most uncatalyzed reactions start from simple precursors like hydrogen cyanide (HCN), formaldehyde (HCHO), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), possibly ammonia (NH3), and other simple organics. These small molecules lack the three-dimensional conformations that can restrict reaction pathways of surface-bound molecules. Consequently, an indiscriminate array of reaction products is synthesized, as was found in the classic MillerUrey experiment, where diverse groups of organic compounds formed. In that experiment, the smallest molecules, such as the simple amino acid glycine, were produced in the greatest amounts (Miller 1957). Similarly, the Murchison meteorite contains seventeen classes of organics compounds that seem to have been formed by random processes (Cronin 1998).

متن کاملA Review on the Importance of Pillared Interlayered Clays in Green Chemical Catalysis
In recent years, Pillared InterLayered Clays (PILCs) have been widely used in several applications; in particular in adsorption and catalysis. The research interest in this family of solids has increased considerably. Clay minerals provide distinct nanometer-scaled layers and interlayers for engineering them as active catalysts. As such, strategic design and preparation has led to a variety of ...
متن کاملPrebiotic RNA Synthesis by Montmorillonite Catalysis
This review summarizes our recent findings on the role of mineral salts in prebiotic RNA synthesis, which is catalyzed by montmorillonite clay minerals. The clay minerals not only catalyze the synthesis of RNA but also facilitate homochiral selection. Preliminary data of these findings have been presented at the "Horizontal Gene Transfer and the Last Universal Common Ancestor (LUCA)" conference...
متن کاملTobermorites: a new family of cation exchangers.
Tobermorites have cation-exchange and selectivity properties intermediate between those of clay minerals and zeolites. Aluminum-substituted tobermorites in particular show high selectivity for cesium. This new group of cation exchangers may find applications in catalysis and in nuclear and hazardous waste disposal.
متن کاملKiller Clays! Natural antibacterial clay minerals
Clay minerals have been used in medicinal applications since Aboriginal times (Carretaro, 2002; Wilson, 2003). Clay poultices are used to heal wounds; people eat clays to coat stomach linings and soothe indigestion; animals eat clay containing trace elements (e.g., As) that can kill worms. The reasons that various clay minerals are effective as medicines may be as variable as the ailment, but b...
