Spanish and Catalan in Majorca: Are There Contact-Induced Changes in the Catalan Vowel System?
نویسنده
چکیده
The vowel systems of Catalan and Spanish are considerably different. Spanish has a simple fivevowel symmetrical system, which is the most common number of vowel phonemes cross-linguistically (Hualde, 2005). As shown in Table 1, the vowels contrast along two dimensions: along the height dimension, there are two high vowels (/i/ and /u/), two mid vowels (/e/ and /o/), and one low vowel (/a/); and along the frontness/backness dimension, there are two front vowels (/i/ and /e/), one central vowel (/a/), and two back vowels (/u/ and /o/). In contrast, Catalan has a seven-vowel symmetrical system with an additional contrast in height, distinguishing higher-mid vowels /e/ and /o/ from lowermid vowels / / and / / in stressed syllables, as shown in Table 2. Moreover, the variety of Catalan spoken in Majorca has the additional vowel phoneme / /, which may appear both in stressed and unstressed position (Recasens, 1991).

The acoustic realization of the /a/-/ə/ alternation in Majorcan Catalan
This study examines the acoustic realization of the Catalan /a/-/əә/ alternation as a function of lexical stress together with the production of the Majorcan Catalan stressed /əә/ by 30 Spanish-dominant and 30 Catalan-dominant early Spanish-Catalan bilinguals in Majorca (Spain). The acoustic analyses show that there are no differences between language dominance groups in the implementation of t...
متن کاملThe production of Catalan mid-back vowels by Catalan-Spanish bilinguals
The present paper analyzes the production of the Catalan /o/-/ɔ/ contrast by six groups of Catalan-Spanish bilinguals residing in the island of Majorca. A process of phonetic convergence between the two languages is currently taking place, with some Catalan features spreading to Spanish and vice versa (Simonet 2008). Based on previous L2speech research (e.g. Flege et al. 1995, 1999, Oyama 1976)...
متن کاملVowel categorization during word recognition in bilingual toddlers.
Toddlers' and preschoolers' knowledge of the phonological forms of words was tested in Spanish-learning, Catalan-learning, and bilingual children. These populations are of particular interest because of differences in the Spanish and Catalan vowel systems: Catalan has two vowels in a phonetic region where Spanish has only one. The proximity of the Spanish vowel to the Catalan ones might pose sp...

The present study examines cognate effects in the phonetic production and processing of the Catalan back mid-vowel contrast (/o/-/ɔ/) by 24 early and highly proficient Spanish-Catalan bilinguals in Majorca (Spain). Participants completed a picture-naming task and a forced-choice lexical decision task in which they were presented with either words (e.g., /bɔsk/ "forest") or non-words based on re...
متن کاملDifferential positional neutralization of back vowels in two Majorcan Catalan sub-dialects
The present paper explores the patterns of unstressed vowel reduction affecting the three back vowels of Catalan: /ɔ/, /o/ and /u/. In particular, we examine two reduction patterns found in the Catalan dialect spoken on the island of Majorca: (i) the general Majorcan pattern according to which /ɔ/ and /o/ merge to [o] in unstressed position and /u/ remains different (as [u]), and (ii) a pattern...
