Charge imbalance observed in voltage-biased superconductor–normal tunnel junctions

چکیده
We have studied the tunneling current of a superconductor-insulator-normal tunnel junction connected to a nonequilibrium superconductor in which nonvanishing charge imbalance is present, by injection experiments using multiterminal devices fabricated with electron beam lithography. We found that the tunneling current could be separated into excess current, due to charge imbalance, and normal current, which showed clear and different dependences on the bias voltage, as expected from the theory of charge imbalance M. Tinkham, Phys. Rev. B 6, 1747 1972 . We also found in the analysis of the normal current that nonequilibrium distributions were created in the normal electrode; they were presumably caused by excitation due to hot electrons that tunneled from the nonequilibrium superconductor.

Influence of Charge and Energy Imbalances on the Tunneling Current through a Superconductor-Normal Metal Junction
We consider quasiparticle charge and energy imbalances in a thin superconductor weakly coupled with two normal-metal electrodes via tunnel junctions at low temperatures. Charge and energy imbalances, which can be created by injecting quasiparticles at one junction, induce excess tunneling current Iex at the other junction. We numerically obtain Iex as a function of the bias voltage Vdet across ...
متن کاملNonlinear thermoelectric effects in high-field superconductor-ferromagnet tunnel junctions
Background: Thermoelectric effects result from the coupling of charge and heat transport and can be used for thermometry, cooling and harvesting of thermal energy. The microscopic origin of thermoelectric effects is a broken electron-hole symmetry, which is usually quite small in metal structures. In addition, thermoelectric effects decrease towards low temperatures, which usually makes them va...

All refractory, NbN/MgO/NbN (superconductor-insulator-superconductor) tunnel junctions have been fabricated by in situ sputter deposition. The influence ofMgO thickness (0.8-6.0 nm) deposited under different sputtering ambients at various deposition rates on current-voltage (IV) characteristics of small-area ( 30 X 30 pm) tunnel junctions is studied. The NbN/MgO/NbN trilayer is deposited in sit...
متن کاملManifestly non-Gaussian fluctuations in superconductor-normal metal tunnel nanostructures.
We propose a mesoscopic setup which exhibits strong and manifestly non-Gaussian fluctuations of energy and temperature when suitably driven out of equilibrium. The setup consists of a normal metal island (N) coupled by tunnel junctions (I) to two superconducting leads (S), forming a SINIS structure, and is biased near the threshold voltage for quasiparticle tunneling, eV≈2Δ. The fluctuations ca...
متن کاملLimitations in cooling electrons using normal-metal-superconductor tunnel junctions.
We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally two limiting factors in cooling electrons using biased tunnel junctions to extract heat from a normal metal into a superconductor. First, when the injection rate of electrons exceeds the internal relaxation rate in the metal to be cooled, the electrons do not obey the Fermi-Dirac distribution, and the concept of temperature cannot be applied ...
