چکیده

This paper presents a massively parallel parser that predicts critical attachment behaviors of the human sentence processor, without the use of explicit preference heuristics or revision strategies. The processing of a syntactic ambiguity is modeled as an active, distributed competition among the potential attachments for a phrase. Computationally motivated constraints on the competitive mechanism provide a principled and uniform account of a range of human attachment preferences and garden path phe-

The Resolution Of Local Syntactic Ambiguity By The Human Sentence Processing Mechanism

The resolution of local syntactic ambiguity by the Human Sentence Processing Mechanism is a topic which has provoked considerable interest in recent years. At issue is whether such ambiguities are resolved on the basis of syntactic information alone (cf. Minimal Attachment Frazier, 1979), or whether they are resolved on some other basis. Crain & Steedman (1982) suggest that the resolution proce...

Effect of Plausibility on Analysis of Garden Paths A Gaze-Tracking Study

Research on the cognitive science of sentence processing has been driven heavily by the study of resolution of syntactic ambiguity in Garden Path sentences. Recent work has shown that apart from syntax, semantics is another essential component that affects the analysis of sentences. In this study, we analyze the role of semantic plausibility in resolution of syntactically ambiguous Garden Path ...

Brain potentials elicited by garden-path sentences: evidence of the application of verb information during parsing.

Event-related potentials were recorded from 13 scalp locations while participants read sentences containing a syntactic ambiguity. In Experiment 1, syntactically disambiguating words that were inconsistent with the "favored" syntactic analysis elicited a positive-going brain potential (P600). Experiment 2 examined whether syntactic ambiguities are resolved by application of a phrase-structure-b...

Semantic Priming Effect on Relative Clause Attachment Ambiguity Resolution in L2

This study examined whether processing ambiguous sentences containing relative clauses (RCs) following a complex determiner phrase (DP) by Persian-speaking learners of L2 English with different proficiency and working memory capacities (WMCs) is affected by semantic priming. The semantic relationship studied was one between the subject/verb of the main clause and one of the DPs in the complex D...

In Defense of Competition During Syntactic Ambiguity Resolution
