چکیده

Many species of songbirds produce songs of unusually low amplitude during aggressive encounters (Dabelsteen et al. 1998); such low amplitude songs have been variously termed ‘soft songs’ (Nice 1943), ‘strangled songs’ (Snow 1958), and ‘quiet songs’ (Dabelsteen et al. 1998). In some species, soft songs are produced in courtship as well as in aggression, but in our study species, the song sparrow (Melospiza melodia), soft songs have been noted only in aggressive contexts (Nice 1943; Beecher et al. 2000). Some birds are known to increase song amplitude when interacting with another male (Brumm & Todt 2004), which seems the logical strategy if the function of the signal is to intimidate a rival. By contrast, decreasing amplitude in an aggressive contest seems somewhat paradoxical. One way to escape the paradox is to suppose that soft song actually has a submissive message rather than an aggressive one; Correspondence William A. Escalation of aggressive vocal signals: a sequential playback study.

Rival conspecifics often produce stereotyped sequences of signals as agonistic interactions escalate. Successive signals in sequence are thought to convey increasingly pronounced levels of aggressive motivation. Here, we propose and test a model of aggressive escalation in black-throated blue warblers, presenting subjects with two sequential and increasingly elevated levels of threat. From a sp...

The social interaction role of song in song sparrows: implications for signal design

Many territorial songbirds use singing as an interactive social signal to reduce inter-neighbor aggression. Communication theory predicts that territorial songbirds may use repertoires of signals to indicate graded levels of aggressive motivation. This theory is supported in song sparrows, a species that uses several different song-based signals such as song-type matching to escalate or de-esca...

The fitness consequences of honesty: Under-signalers have a survival advantage in song sparrows.

How honest or reliable signaling can evolve and be maintained has been a major question in evolutionary biology. The question is especially puzzling for a particular class of signals used in aggressive interactions: threat signals. Here, we report a study on song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) in which we assayed males with playbacks on their territories to quantify their aggressiveness (flights ...

The study of neutron interactions with soft tissue using Monte Carlo simulation using the source PF

The most important part of neutron therapy treatment (NCT1) is to achieve a beam of neutrons with suitable energy and intensity, as well as the least pollution and damage. In this study, in order to correct the neutron spectrum from D-D fusion and its use in neutron therapy, a set of different materials which are called the Beam Shaping Assembly (BSA) was placed in the direction of energy 2.45 ...

Aggressive Fibromatosis of Parapharyngeal Space: a rare case report

Aggressive fibromatosis also known as extra abdominal desmoid tumor is an uncommon benign tumor of soft tissue origin with fibroblastic proliferationSince the tumor is locally aggressive, the lesion may be misdiagnosed as low -grade fibrosarcoms. It accounts for 0.03% - 0.1% of all body tumors and 3% of all soft tissue tumors. Only 10% to 15% of these lesions occur in head and neck, usually in ...
