Studies on Hookworm Disease in Szechwan Province, West China
نویسنده
چکیده
Szechwan is one of the largest, richest and most populous provinces in China, extending from 101?-111? east longitude and 27?-24? north latitude. The population is estimated at 45,000,000. It is essentially an agricultural province; the important crops are rice, sweet potatoes and corn. Though the land is very fertile and productive, the living standard in rural Szechwan is very low. The food of the people is poor, insufficient and deficient in proteins and fats, a condition which makes hookworm disease more serious. Most of the women have bound feet, but they take an active part in farm work. While working in the fields, men and children are usually barefooted and women are either barefooted or wear cloth shoes or straw sandals. Many of them are illiterate and superstitious. Human excrement is carefully conserved, stored in pits and employed as the chief manure in agriculture.

The order of dissection is slightly different from that which is often adopted; however, the s...
متن کاملApplication of a real-time PCR method for detecting and monitoring hookworm Necator americanus infections in Southern China.
OBJECTIVE To develop a quantitative PCR method for detecting hookworm infection and quantification. METHODS A real-time PCR method was designed based on the intergenic region II of ribosomal DNA of the hookworm Necator americanus. The detection limit of this method was compared with the microscopy-based Kato-Katz method. The real-time PCR method was used to conduct an epidemiological survey o...
متن کاملStudies on the control of hookworm and other soil-transmitted helminthiases in farmers in Zhejiang Province, China.
Different periodic selective chemotherapeutic schemes were used to control hookworm and other soil-transmitted helminthiases in eight villages in five counties in Zhejiang Province, China, 1985-1988. The results showed that the prevalence rates of hookworm, ascariasis, and trichuriasis decreased from 35.0-74.4%, 47.0-.76% and 22.9-47.5% to 3.2-15.8%, 9.9-47.8%, and 3.5-31.2%, respectively, usin...
متن کاملSynergistic Effect of Subtoxic-dose Cisplatin and TRAIL to Mediate Apoptosis by Down-regulating Decoy Receptor 2 and Up-regulating Caspase-8, Caspase-9 and Bax Expression on NCI-H460 and A549 Cells
Objective(s): Although tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) can selectively induce apoptosis in tumor cells, more than half of tumors including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) exhibit TRAIL-resistance. The purpose of this study was to determine whether subtoxic-dose cisplatin and TRAIL could synergistically enhance apoptosis on NSCLC cells and investigate its under...
متن کاملImpact of hookworm deworming on anemia and nutritional status among children in Thailand.
Hookworm infection is associated with anemia, especially among children and deworming can improve anemic status; however, little information is available about the degree to which anemia improves after deworming. We chose hookworm-endemic rural areas of Thailand, Nan Province in the north, Kanchanaburi Province in the west and Nakhon Si Thammarat Province in the south, to evaluate this problem....
