changes are chiefly,?cloudy swelling of the hepatic cells, the nuclei of which soon disappear fallowed by disintegration of the hepatic cell nucleus. A few mouths ago I had tlie opportunity of performing a post-mortem examination in a case of hepatio abscess that had been opeued and was drained and otherwise treated antiseptically. The patient died from intestinal haemorrhage resulting from dysentery, from which he had previously suffered, and was then suffering, intercurrently. The gradual diminution of the size of the abscess cavity was well shown, as was likewise a circumferential layer of healthy granulations. The capsule, covered and infiltrated with recently-formed fibro-nuclear tissue over the site of the abscess, was much thickened and adherent to the peritoneum. It is not uncommon to find patients suffering from all the general signs of hepatic suppuration, and many of the local ones, except those indicative of pointing, in which the presence of pus had been affirmatively diagnosed, and yet the patients have recovered, possibly by the caseation and dessication of the pus. It is, of course, extremely difficult to state whether these were cases in which "healthy" lymph in abundauce, and not actual pus, was discharged into the parenchyma. I have no doubt but that a superabundant production of formative lymph, without actual pus-production, often creates symptoms and signs simulating abscess. These encysted abscesses undergoing caseation are a source of danger until their complete dessication, as they
