Effects of ethanol and methanol on lipid metabolism in Bacillus subtilis.

چکیده
In Bacillus subtilis, the fatty acid moiety of the phospholipids was affected differently during growth in the presence of 1.1 M-methanol or 0.7 M-ethanol, though at these concentrations methanol and ethanol had the same effects on growth rate and completely inhibited sporulation. Synthesis of phosphatidylglycerol was also strongly inhibited and the amount of total cell phospholipids was reduced by 50% by both alcohols. The composition of fatty acids, especially the relative concentration of 12-methyltetradecanoic acid, was modified only by ethanol; in bacteria grown in the presence of methanol, changes in fatty acid composition were negligible. In non-sporulating mutants, synthesis of phosphatidylglycerol was much less affected than in the wild-type and synthesis of phosphatidylethanolamine was increased. In these strains, fatty acid composition was also modified by ethanol but unaffected by methanol.

Bacillus Amyloliquefaciens Alpha-amylase Inhibition by Organic Solvents: A Study on Methanol, Ethanol and Propanol
Alpha-amylase is widely used as an industrial enzyme, and a therapeutic target for which inhibitors are designed. Organic solvents are used to dissolve various compounds that would be studied as moderators of alpha-amylases, but they could themselves affect enzyme activity and stability. Methanol, ethanol and propanol are simple alcohols that may be commonly used to this end, and their effect h...
متن کاملEvaluation of the effects of diethyl ether and methanol extracts of carpet anemone (Sarcophyton spp.) and starfish (Pentaceraster spp.) on E. coli and Bacillus subtilis bacteria
Marine environment is the main source of natural bioactive products whose chemical-structural properties are not similar with other natural products of plants and other inland organisms. The present study was carried out to evaluate antibiotic properties of diethyl ether and methanol extracts of two marine species including starfish and carpet anemone. The samples of starfish and carpet anemone...

The antibacterial activity of methanol, ethanol, chloroform, and hexane extracts of the leaves of Himalayan gymnospermous plant Ginkgo biloba L. was assessed against five animal and plant pathogenic strains (Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Erwinia chrysanthemi, and Xanthomonas phaseoli) employing disc-diffusion and broth-dilution assays. The methanol extract show...
متن کاملEffects of dietary Bacillus subtilis on growth performance and immune responses, in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792)
Four hundred and eighty five rainbow trout (76 ± 6.44 g mean weight) were acclimated to laboratory conditions and then randomly divided into four groups of tanks in triplicate. The first group (Group 1) was fed on a commercial diet (control) without Bacillus subtilis supplementation. The second, third and fourth groups (Group 2, Group 3 and Group 4, respectively) were given a diet supplemented ...
