The nature of rainfall variability over Africa on time scales of decades to millenia
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper begins with an overview of the African rainfall regime, noting in particular the contrast among various regions Ž . of the continent, followed by a description of the nature of climatic i.e., rainfall variability over Africa on time scales of decades and centuries. The decadal scale is examined using modern data covering the twentieth century. The century scale is examined using historical reconstructions of climate, based on a combination of geologic, geographic and historical Ž . information e.g., lake chronologies, landscape descriptions, archives and diaries . The presentation includes some results of an analysis of a new historical semi-quantitative data set for Africa covering the last two centuries. It was produced using a combination of historical information, nineteenth century rainfall records, and statistical relationships among various sectors of Africa. Presented here are reconstructions of lake level fluctuations for numerous lakes of eastern and southern Africa. This overview of climatic fluctuations is utilized to uncover inherent spatial and temporal characteristics of the rainfall variability. The dominance over time of various spatial modes is emphasized and the questions of synchroneity of the hemispheres and the abruptness of change are considered. The contrast between the two hemispheres is also surveyed, notably the different time scales of variability and potential causal factors in the variability. One of the most important contrasts is the multi-decadal persistence of anomalies over most of northern Africa. This has implications for the causes of long-term fluctuations, even those historical and paleo-time scales. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Investigation of the atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with extreme rainfall events over the Coastal West Africa
This study investigates the atmospheric circulation associated with extreme rainfall events over the coastal West Africa. The rainfall data of this study were obtained from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), spanning from 1981 to 2010. The atmospheric datasets were also obtained from the ERA-Interim reanalysis. The study employed the Z-Index to categorize dry and wet years into...
متن کاملClimate-Human interaction over the Iranian Plateau during the Upper Pleistocene-Holocene: A review
During the past two decades an array of studies have shed light on potential links between the evolution of Hominids as well as Human dispersal out of Africa and episodes of abrupt climate change. Although archaeological evidences suggest that anatomically modified humans appeared in Africa between 200 and 150 ky ago, the timing of the early humans migration out of Africa remained unclear. Stra...
متن کاملImpacts of projected changes and variability in climatic data on major food crops yields in Rwanda
This paper investigated the response of major food crop yields namely beans, cassava, Irish potatoes, maize and sweet potatoes to ongoing changes in climate inRwanda. The projected daily precipitation and temperature data for the period2000-2050 used in this study were generated by stochastic weather generator(LARS-WG) from daily raw data for the period 1961 -2000. These data werecollected from ...
متن کاملImpact of Climate Variability on Cool Weather Crop Yield in Ethiopia
The research examined effect of climate variability on yield of the two dominant cool weather cereals (wheat and barley) in central highland and Arssi grain plough farming systems of Ethiopia using eight round unbalanced panel data (1994-2014). The stochastic frontier model result revealed that production inputs for producing wheat and barley in the two farming system had significant effect. Cr...
متن کاملRole of vegetation dynamics in enhancing the low-frequency variability of the Sahel rainfall
Rainfall observations in the Sahel region of West Africa show significant variability at the timescale of decades. Here we explore the mechanisms of this lowfrequency variability using a coupled biosphere-atmosphere model which includes explicit representation of vegetation dynamics. By forcing the model with the observed sea surface temperature (SST) of the tropical Atlantic Ocean during the p...
