Title Effect of oral erythromycin on gastric and small bowel transit
نویسندگان
چکیده
AIM: To determine the effect of oral erythromycin on gastric and small bowel transit time of capsule endoscopy. METHODS: Consecutive patients who underwent capsule endoscopy during the 16-mo study period were either given 250 mg oral erythromycin, 1 h prior to swallowing the capsule endoscope or nothing. The gastric and small bowel transit time, and the small bowel image quality were compared. RESULTS: Twenty-four patients received oral erythromycin whereas 14 patients were not given any prokinetic agent. Patients who received erythromycin had a significantly lower gastric transit time than control (16 min vs 70 min, P = 0.005), whereas the small bowel transit time was comparable between the two groups (227 min vs 183 min, P = 0.18). Incomplete small bowel examination was found in three patients of the control group and in one patient of the erythromycin group. There was no significant difference in the overall quality of small bowel images between the two groups. A marked reduction in gastric transit time was noted in two patients who had repeat capsule endoscopy after oral erythromycin. CONCLUSION: Use of oral erythromycin significantly reduces the gastric transit time of capsule endoscopy. © 2005 The WJG Press and Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Objective(s):This study was carried out to investigate the effects of COX-2 selective inhibitor (Celecoxib) or non-selective COX inhibitor (Ibuprofen) on gastrointestinal motility. Materials and Methods: The rats were randomly divided into five groups including: intact, sham, traumatic brain injury (TBI) group (intact rats under TBI), Celecoxib group (10 mg/kg), Ibuprofen group (10 mg/kg). متن کاملCompletion rate of small bowel capsule endoscopy is higher after erythromycin compared to domperidone
BACKGROUND In up to 30 percent of small bowel capsule endoscopy procedures, the capsule does not reach the cecum within recording time. A prolonged gastric transit time has been recognized as a risk factor for incomplete capsule endoscopy. The aim of this study was to analyze if a single dose of orally administered erythromycin prior to capsule endoscopy results in a higher completion rate comp...
متن کاملEffect of bran, ispaghula, and inert plastic particles on gastric emptying and small bowel transit in humans: the role of physical factors.
BACKGROUND Coarse bran is known to accelerate transit through the whole gut and to increase stool weight. This effect is much reduced by grinding the bran, suggesting that particle size influences gut motor patterns. AIMS To compare the effect of 15 g coarse bran with 15 g inert plastic particles and 7 g of ispaghula on the gastric emptying and small bowel transit of a rice pudding test meal....
متن کاملGastrointestinal Motility, Part 2: Small-Bowel and Colon Transit.
Because of the difficulty often encountered in deciding whether a patient's symptoms originate in the upper or lower gastrointestinal tract, gastrointestinal transit scintigraphy is a uniquely suited noninvasive, quantitative, and physiologic method of determining whether there is a motility disorder affecting the stomach, small bowel, or colon. Small-bowel and colon transit studies can be perf...
