چکیده

We present experimentally measured adsorption isotherms of CO2, H2, and N2 on a phenol-formaldehyde resin-based activated carbon, which had been previously synthesized for the separation of CO2 in a precombustion capture process. The single component adsorption isotherms were measured in a magnetic suspension balance at three different temperatures (298, 318, and 338 K) and over a large range of pressures (from 0 to 3000-4000 kPa). These values cover the temperature and pressure conditions likely to be found in a precombustion capture scenario, where CO2 needs to be separated from a CO2/H2/N2 gas stream at high pressure (~1000-1500 kPa) and with a high CO2 concentration (~20-40 vol %). Data on the pure component isotherms were correlated using the Langmuir, Sips, and dual-site Langmuir (DSL) models, i.e., a two-, three-, and four-parameter model, respectively. By using the pure component isotherm fitting parameters, adsorption equilibrium was then predicted for multicomponent gas mixtures by the extended models. The DSL model was formulated considering the energetic site-matching concept, recently addressed in the literature. Experimental gas-mixture adsorption equilibrium data were calculated from breakthrough experiments conducted in a lab-scale fixed-bed reactor and compared with the predictions from the models. Breakthrough experiments were carried out at a temperature of 318 K and five different pressures (300, 500, 1000, 1500, and 2000 kPa) where two different CO2/H2/N2 gas mixtures were used as the feed gas in the adsorption step. The DSL model was found to be the one that most accurately predicted the CO2 adsorption equilibrium in the multicomponent mixture. The results presented in this work highlight the importance of performing experimental measurements of mixture adsorption equilibria, as they are of utmost importance to discriminate between models and to correctly select the one that most closely reflects the actual process.

Precombustion CO2 capture by means of phenol-formaldehyde resin-derived carbons: from equilibrium to dynamic conditions

The performance of two phenol-formaldehyde resin-based activated carbons prepared in our laboratory, as potential adsorbents for precombustion CO2 capture has been evaluated under static (adsorption isotherms) and dynamic (adsorption-desorption cycles conducted in a fixed bed) conditions. Most of the literature on CO2 capture with solid sorbents is based on equilibrium CO2 adsorption capacities...

A single-ligand ultra-microporous MOF for precombustion CO2 capture and hydrogen purification

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) built from a single small ligand typically have high stability, are rigid, and have syntheses that are often simple and easily scalable. However, they are normally ultra-microporous and do not have large surface areas amenable to gas separation applications. We report an ultra-microporous (3.5 and 4.8 Å pores) Ni-(4-pyridylcarboxylate)2 with a cubic framework tha...

Carbon Dioxide Capture by Modified UVM-7 Adsorbent

In this study, bimodal meso-porous silica (UVM-7) synthesized and fabricated amino silane modified supports were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption/desorption, transmission electron microscope (TEM), elemental analysis and titration. Capacity of CO2 capture on modified bimodal pore structure silica at 70°C was calculated using breakthrough curves; and it was found th...

Development of New Potassium Carbonate Sorbent for CO2 Capture under Real Flue Gas Conditions

In this paper, the development of a new potassium carbonateon alumina support sorbent prepared by impregnating K2CO3 with an industrial grade of Al2O3 support was investigated. The CO2 capture capacity was measured using real flue gas with 8% CO2 and 12% H2O in a fixed-bed reactor at a temperature of 65 °C using breakthrough curves. The developed sorbent showed an adsorption capacity of 66.2 mg...

Stepwise Synthesis of Mesoporous Carbon Nitride Functionalized by Melamine Based Dendrimer Amines for Adsorption of CO2 and CH4

In this study, a novel solid dendrimer amine (hyperbranched polymers) was prepared using mesoporous carbon nitride functionalized by melamine based dendrimer amines. This adsorbent was denoted MDA-MCN-1. The process was stepwise synthesis and hard-templating method using mesoporous silica SBA-15 as a template. Cyanuric chloride and N,N-diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA, Merck) were used for function...
