Water flow drives biodiversity by mediating rarity in marine benthic communities.

چکیده
In aquatic ecosystems, water flow mediates the delivery of reproductive propagules, competition and predation, each of which may have contrasting effects on biodiversity. Here, we show that water flow has a net positive effect on the biodiversity of benthic invertebrate communities in three biogeographic regions. In Palau and Alaska, flow velocity predicted 55-91% of the variance in species richness in natural communities. In experimental communities in Alaska and Maine, enhanced water flow treatments resulted in higher levels of species density (+56%) and richness (+74%), which were predicted by the abundance of locally rare species. Additionally, the richness of recruitment was higher in experimentally enhanced flows (+46%). Thus, the data suggest that flow drives diversity by mediating the delivery of rare species in multiple biogeographic regions. Consequently, flow velocity should be included in future developments of diversity theory and conservation strategy.

Benthic Fauna of Shadegan Wetland
Biological response and ecological indices of benthic communities, such as greater mortality of foraminifera and shell abnormalities, have been used to document pollution effects on ecosystems. Shadegan Wetland was damaged from a deposition of huge amounts of soot and products of burning oilwells of Kuwait as well as chronic exhaust fumes of refinery and industrial furnaces. In this investigati...
متن کاملThe impact assessment of cage aquaculture on benthic communities along the south eastern Black Sea
The present study was conducted to examine the impact of cage aquaculture on benthic communities in coastal areas (depth 25 to 50 m) from fish farming operations located along the southeastern Black Sea (Ordu-Perşembe, Trabzon-Yomra and Rize central). Sampling was conducted seasonally from April 2007 to 2009. Sediment samples were taken using Ekman Grab (box core- 0.04 m2). Temperature, salinit...
متن کاملSome Implications of High Biodiversity for Management of Tropical Marine Ecosystems—An Australian Perspective
While high biodiversity has been widely reported from the tropics, we suggest that in reality there is a considerable underestimate of the total biodiversity. We have concentrated on the tropical regions of Australia and the Coral Triangle. The best known groups are the corals, fish, and commercially important invertebrates. In considering whether this is true, we have concentrated on the diver...
متن کاملA Study of Global Biodiversity Patterns in the Marine Motile Fauna of Hard Substrata
A global study of latitudinal gradients in biodiversity of marine shallow-water, motile epifauna of hard substrata has been initiated by Plymouth Marine Laboratory and the International Association of Meiobenthologists. It is based on the use of artificial substratum units (ASUs) consisting of four pan-scourers and emphasizes the standardization of habitat type and complexity, sample area, samp...
متن کاملThe Role of Biodiversity for the Functioning of Rocky Reef Communities
A major focus of ecological research has been on understanding the processes that determine the diversity of organisms at a particular location (Hutchinson 1959) . Many important classic studies elucidating these local-scale processes have been conducted in marine hard-bottom communities (e.g. Kitching and Ebling 1961 ; Paine 1966 ; Menge and Sutherland 1976 ; Connell 1978 ; Lubchenco 1978 ; So...
