Comparing the vario-scale approach with a discrete multi-representation based approach for automated generalisation of topographic data

چکیده
Datasets at different scales can be obtained and maintained by two main approaches that differ considerably. The first option is the vario-scale approach that offers the possibility to derive a map at an arbitrary map scale (hence its name) by performing once a fully automatic generalisation process on the input data set. This sounds as the optimal situation. However, since fast and fully automated generalisation of topographic data is still a challenge, National Mapping Agencies (NMAs) employ a second option, i.e. the multi-scale approach, to produce and maintain maps at different, predefined scales. Examples are reported in the literature for IGN, France (Lecordix et al. 2007), KMS, Denmark (Foerster et al, 2010), ICC, Catalonia (Baella & Pla 2005), Germany (AdV, 2007), and The Netherlands (Stoter et al, 2009). The tGAP data structure (van Oosterom, 1995; van Oosterom, 2005; Meijers, 2011) provides a promising implementation of the vario-scale approach in which the most detailed data is stored once, and an incremental object by object generalisation process is run and represented in a data structure, which can afterwards be used to efficiently obtain any arbitrary scale on the fly (Vermeij et al, 2003; Meijers, 2011). Figure 1 shows the concept of tGAP.

Continuous Road Network Generalization
This paper presents our research efforts to obtain a sensible vario-scale representation of a road network. A vario-scale representation makes it possible to get maps at an arbitrary map scale, being more flexible with how much detail is shown during the use of geographic data. For this, an offline process creates a suitable vario-scale data structure (called tGAP), that then can be used for ge...
متن کامل2D vario-scale representations based on real 3D structure
This paper focuses on 3D data structures supporting an alternative approach for creating 2D vario-scale maps. The smooth animated zooming functionality have lead us to investigate a volumetric representation of gradually changing vario-scale objects. In this paper, the principle of vario-scale maps with theoretical knowledge about 3D representation (2D space plus 1D scale) is briefly introduced...
متن کاملUtilising urban context recognition and machine learning to improve the generalisation of buildings
The introduction of automated generalisation procedures in map production systems requires that generalisation systems are capable of processing large amounts of map data in acceptable time and that cartographic quality is similar to traditional map products. With respect to these requirements, we examine two complementary approaches that should improve generalisation systems currently in use b...
متن کاملAn integrated simulation-DEA approach to multi-criteria ranking of scenarios for execution of operations in a construction project
The purpose of this study is to examine different scenarios for implementing operations in the pre-construction phase of a project, based on several competing criteria with different importance levels in order to achieve a more efficient execution plan. This paper presents a new framework that integrates discrete event simulation (DES) and data envelopment analysis (DEA) to rank different scena...
متن کاملMulti-Scale GIS : From Generalisation to Data Integration
The paper analyses the requirements on automated generalisation when applied in the context of an existing multiple-resolution data infrastructure, where the small scale data sets should not be replaced but kept and updated incrementally. The situation is explained by example of the official German topographic-cartographic information system ATKIS.
