Histology of Mammary Gland during Lactating and Non-lactating Phases of Madras Red Sheep with Special Reference to Involution

چکیده
The histological study was carried out on mammary glands collected from 14 Madras red sheep, 7 in lactating period 7 in non-lactation period. The connective tissue became reduced and lobuloalveolar tissue was predominantly increased during lactating period. The alveoli were laminated, filled with secretion and lined by cuboidal active secretory cells containing lipid droplets and protein granules during active lactation. The alveoli of the non-lactating sheep mammary glands showed the alveolar degeneration. Large empty vacuoles and autophagosomes in the cytoplasm of numerous apoptotic alveolar epithelial cells. Macrophages, mast cells, neutrophils and lymphocytes were found in the interalveolar areas and lumina of alveoli. The occurrence of corpora amylacea located both in the lumen of alveoli (intra-alveolar bodies) and septal connective tissue (Interstitial bodies) was frequent in mammary glands of non-lactating sheep. It was concluded that these regressive changes during non-lactating period form a physical barrier in ductulo-alveolar system for protecting the gland from bacterial infection.

Loss of Igfbp7 Causes Precocious Involution in Lactating Mouse Mammary Gland
BACKGROUND Insulin like growth factors (IGFs) and their binding proteins (IGFBPs) are secreted peptides that play major roles in regulating the normal development and maturation of mammary gland. While Igfbp7 has been shown to decrease breast tumor growth, its role in regulating the normal mammary gland development has not been studied. To this end, we generated Igfbp7-null mice and examined th...
متن کاملAcetate metabolism in lactating sheep.
1. The metabolism of acetate, glucose and D(-)-3-hydroxybutyrate was studied in lactating and non-lactating sheep in vivo. Special consideration was given to the utilization by hind-limb muscle in both groups of sheep and the uptake of nutrients by the lactating mammary gland was also measured. 2. The entry of acetate into the circulation (mmol/h per kg body-weight) was similar in all experimen...
متن کاملBASOPHILS OF PARS DISTALIS ADENOHYPOPHYSIS IN MADRAS RED SHEEP (Ovis aries) – HISTOLOGY WITH REFERENCE TO VARIOUS AGE GROUPS
Histophysiological study of pituitary gland was conducted on Madras red sheep to record the age related changes. The pars distalis adenohypophysis comprised of cells arranged in irregular cords, grouped as acidophils, basophils and chromophobes. The basophils were round, oval and irregularly polygonal cells with distinct cell boundaries observed as 4 variants. The type I basophils were angular ...
متن کاملStem/progenitor cells in non-lactating versus lactating equine mammary gland.
The mammary gland is a highly regenerative organ that can undergo multiple cycles of proliferation, lactation, and involution. Based on the facts that (i) mammary stem/progenitor cells (MaSC) are proposed to be the driving forces behind mammary growth and function and (ii) variation exists between mammalian species with regard to physiological and pathological functioning of this organ, we beli...
متن کاملZnT2 is a critical mediator of lysosomal-mediated cell death during early mammary gland involution
Mammary gland involution is the most dramatic example of physiological cell death. It occurs through an initial phase of lysosomal-mediated cell death (LCD) followed by mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis. Zinc (Zn) activates both LCD and apoptosis in vitro. The Zn transporter ZnT2 imports Zn into vesicles and mitochondria and ZnT2-overexpression activates cell death in mammary epithelial cells (M...
