A flexible decision support system for steel hot rolling mill scheduling
نویسنده
چکیده
A steel hot rolling mill subjects steel slabs to high temperatures and pressures in order to form steel coils. We describe the scheduling problem for a steel hot rolling mill. We detail the operation of a commercial decision support system which provides semi-automatic schedules, comparing its operation with existing, manual planning procedures. This commercial system is currently in use in several steel mills worldwide. The system features a very detailed multiobjective model of the steel hot rolling process. This model is solved using a variety of bespoke local and Tabu search heuristics. We describe both this model and the heuristics used to solve it. The production environment is highly unstable with frequent, unforeseen events interrupting planned production. We describe how the scheduling system’s models, algorithms and interfaces have been developed to handle this instability. We consider particularly the impact on existing planning and production systems and the qualitative improvements which result from the system’s implementation. q 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. Design and Implementation of an Effective Decision Support System: A Case Study in Steel Hot Rolling Mill Scheduling
The work described here was largely performed at a medium-sized European steel mill, with an unusually diverse product portfolio, and hence a difficult scheduling problem to solve. The decision support system developed as a result has been successfully used, with minor modifications, at many steel mills worldwide. The work was carried out while the author was employed at A. I. Systems, Belgium,...
متن کاملA Model to Minimize the Hot Rolling Time of a Steel Slab Considering the Steel's Chemical Composition
This paper presents an optimization approach to deal with the problem of minimizing the hot rolling time of a steel slab. Unlike traditional approaches, this work also considers the chemical composition of the steel slab as a parameter, allowing the automatic setup for different steels of the hot rolling mill. To validate the approach discussed here, a six-stand rolling mill is modeled as an op...
متن کاملIncremental Support Vector Regression for Steering Hot Rolling Mills
Machine learning concepts, such as the support vector machine (SVM), have been theoretically discussed in great detail, but in industrial applications still rather old-fashioned solutions are preferred. To show that learning concepts improve industrial planning, scheduling, and steering processes, a cooperation with a steel manufacturer was initiated to build a prototype pass schedule calculato...
متن کاملProduction Optimization and Scheduling in a Steel Plant: Hot Rolling Mill
In this presentation we investigate the production scheduling of a hot rolling mill in a steel plant. The production schedule must adapt to strict production rules derived from metallurgic and physical constraints. Successful manual planning requires therefore in practice thorough process knowledge and years of operating experience. In our optimization-based approach, we first build parts of th...
متن کاملThe Effect on Rolling Mill of Waviness in Hot Rolled Steel
The edge waviness in hot rolled steel is a common defect. Variables that affect such defect include raw material and machine. These variables are necessary to consider to understand such defect. This research studied the defect of edge waviness for SS 400 of metal sheet manufacture. Defect of metal sheets were divided into two groups. The specimens were investigated on chemical composition and ...
