Finding planets and life among the stars

چکیده
A re we alone in the universe? How can we find out? What would happen if we made contact with extraterrestrial life forms, intelligent or otherwise? These questions have fascinated humans ever since we understood that there is a universe beyond our pale blue dot. As the British physicist and author Arthur C Clarke put it: “Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the universe or we are not. Both are equally frightening”.

Comparative Planetology and the Search for Life Beyond the Solar System
The study of planets beyond the solar system and the search for other habitable planets and life is just beginning. Ground-based (radial velocity and transits) and space-based surveys (transits and astrometry) will identify planets spanning a wide range of size and orbital location, from Earth-sized objects within 1 AU to giant planets beyond 5 AU, orbiting stars as near as a few parsec and as ...
متن کاملAstronomical Searches for Earth-like Planets and Signs of Life
If Earth-like planets orbit nearby stars, they could be detectable with specially designed telescopes. Direct observations would be very revealing, particularly low resolution infrared spectra, which could establish habitability on the basis of temperature and atmospheric water. Abundant, primitive life based on organized molecular structure might reveal itself, as on Earth, by an atmospheric c...
متن کاملSuppression of the water ice and snow albedo feedback on planets orbiting red dwarf stars and the subsequent widening of the habitable zone.
M stars comprise 80% of main sequence stars, so their planetary systems provide the best chance for finding habitable planets, that is, those with surface liquid water. We have modeled the broadband albedo or reflectivity of water ice and snow for simulated planetary surfaces orbiting two observed red dwarf stars (or M stars), using spectrally resolved data of Earth's cryosphere. The gradual re...
متن کاملOn the Relationship Between Debris Disks and Planets
Dust in debris disks is generated by collisions among planetesimals. The existence of these planetesimals is a consequence of the planet formation process, but the relationship between debris disks and planets has not been clearly established. Here we analyze Spitzer/MIPS 24 and 70μm data for 150 planet-bearing stars, and compare the incidence of debris disks around these stars with a sample of...
متن کاملChances for earth-like planets and life around metal-poor stars
We discuss the difficulties of forming earth-like planets in metalpoor environments, such as those prevailing in the Galactic halo (Pop II), the Magellanic Clouds, and the early universe. We suggest that, with less heavy elements available, terrestrial planets will be smaller size and lower mass than in our solar system (solar metallicity). Such planets may not be able to sustain life as we kno...
