چکیده

Paleontologists have long speculated that the bizarre, giant Ordovician gastropods Maclurites Le Sueur, 1818 and Maclurina Ulrich and Scofield, 1897 lived more like suspension-feeding oysters than typical algivorous snails. Geometric and eigenshape morphometrics demonstrate the plausibility of this lifestyle, but with a twist. The apertures of these gastropods were small ellipsoids when young, transitioning rapidly to polygonal morphologies at maturity, with angulations (sinuses) occurring in regions associated with development of mature ctenidia (gills) and enhanced stability on the seafloor. Combined with knowledge of extant suspension-feeding gastropods and functional and phylogenetic analysis of the anatomy of other fossil relatives, this ontogenetic pattern suggests these snails began life as typical mobile algaegrazers, but switched to sedentary suspension-feeders as they aged.

Burrowers from the Past: Mitochondrial Signatures of Ordovician Bivalve Infaunalization

Bivalves and gastropods are the two largest classes of extant molluscs. Despite sharing a huge number of features, they do not share a key ecological one: gastropods are essentially epibenthic, while most bivalves are infaunal. However, this is not the ancestral bivalve condition; Cambrian forms were surface crawlers and only during the Ordovician a fundamental infaunalization process took plac...

Association of orogenic activity with the Ordovician radiation of marine life.

The Ordovician radiation of marine life was among the most substantial pulses of diversification in Earth history and coincided in time with a major increase in the global level of orogenic activity. To investigate a possible causal link between these two patterns, the geographic distributions of 6576 individual appearances of Ordovician vician genera around the world were evaluated with respec...

Global Ordovician faunal transitions in the marine benthos: proximate causes

-During the Ordovician Radiation, domination of benthic marine communities shifted away from trilobites, toward articulate brachiopods, and, to a lesser degree, toward bivalves and gastropods. In this paper, we identify the patterns in origination and extinction probabilities that gave rise to these transitions. Using methods adapted from capture-mark-recapture (CMR) population studies, we esti...

The Geology of Ohio--the Ordovician

To geologists, the Ordovician System of Ohio is probably the most famous of the state's Paleozoic rock systems. The alternating shales and limestones of the upper part of this system crop out in southwestern Ohio in the Cincinnati region and yield an incredible abundance and diversity of well-preserved fossils. Representatives of this fauna reside in museums and private collections throughout t...

Population structure of graptolite assemblages

Graptolite rhabdosomes display a diverse suite of morphologies. The range of morphotypes present within most moderate to high diversity assemblages from the Ordovician and Silurian is similar, despite the different taxonomic composition of the faunas at different times. Survivorship analyses of graptolite faunas from the Ordovician and Silurian demonstrate strong similarities in the mortality r...
