What Can GIS Learn From FLOSS?
نویسندگان
چکیده
What can geographic information systems (GIS) learn from “free/libré open source software” (FLOSS) computing? Surprisingly more than might appear at first blush. FLOSS depends upon sharing ideas, techniques, data, and applications to be successful, and GIS practitioners have always promoted sharing as benefiting GIS. It would appear that FLOSS and GIS have something in common. It seems reasonable to assume that the ideas and products that have helped FLOSS grow rapidly and might also be applicable to GIS, particularly participatory GIS. But it is also potentially problematic because of numerous reasons. While social networking communities such as Flickr and Wikipedia have attracted a growing audience, they have also attracted controversy. These communities have sprung from the FLOSS wellspring, but typically they are not used for the same kind of decision-making as a participatory GIS (PGIS) implementation. Ideas and techniques from emerging Internet practices may have direct implications for PGIS. In particular, concepts of and approaches to FLOSS computing and networking may bolster the philosophical approach that underlies PGIS. But caution is advised in applying principles of social cooperation developed in the digital world to more traditional, physical worlds where PGIS might be implemented.

A Preliminary Analysis of Learning Awareness in FLOSS Projects
It can be argued that participating in free/libre open source software (FLOSS) projects can have a positive effect in the contributor's learning process. The need to interact with other contributors, to read other people's code, write documentation, or use different tools, can motivate and implicitly foster learning. In order to validate this statement we design an appropriate questionnaire ask...

This Commentary forms a response to Nikogosian’s and Kickbusch’s forward-looking perspective about the legal strength of international health instruments. Building on their arguments, in this commentary we consider what we can learn from the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) for the adoption of new legal international health instruments.

Ooms et al sets out some good general principles for a global social support system to improve fairer global competitiveness as a result of redistribution. This commentary sets out to summarize some of the conditions that would need to be satisfied for it to level up gradients in inequality through such a social support system, using the National Basketball Association (NBA) example as a point ...

Differences in public health approaches to control the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic could largely explain substantial variations in epidemiological indicators (such as incidence and mortality) between the West and the East. COVID-19 revealed vulnerabilities of most western countries’ healthcare systems in their response to the ongoing public health crisi...

The year 2013 will mark the 10th anniversary of the renowned FLOSS surveys[1]. They were the first international efforts to conduct online (and offline) questionnaire surveys to collect comprehensive data on FLOSS developers, such as who they were, what motivated them, how they were organized, then aim at picturing an overview of what the FLOSS (Free/Libre/Open Source Software) development was ...
