Adaptation of myofibrils to a microstructured polymeric substrate

چکیده
Myofibrils are functional contractile elements in skeleton and cardiac muscle cells of vertebrates and in skeleton muscle cells of invertebrates. ach myofibril consists of parallel filaments, allowing maximal contraction performance. When these muscle cells are cultured in vitro, this parallel rrangement is often disrupted due to cell remodeling. The contractile performance of the muscle cells is thus deteriorated. In this paper, we present microstructured polymeric substrate to regulate the reassembly of the myofibrils during cell remodeling. The results show the myofibrils in longerm cultured heart muscle cells are reassembled directionally, along longitudinal axis of the microstructured polymeric sidewalls. This directional rrangement is further validated by monitoring the mechanical performance of the living cells, using embedded polymeric microstructures. This ork opens a door for orientation of subcellular elements using microstructured extracellular environments, and is the basis for development of in itro assembled muscle patches. 2006 Elsevier B.V. Removal of Particulate Contamination from Solid Surfaces Using Polymeric Micropillars.
This Research Article describes a novel method for removal of particulate contamination, loosely referred to as dust, from solid surfaces using polymeric micropillars. In this Research Article, we illustrate for the first time that polymeric microfibrils of controlled interfacial and geometrical properties can effectively remove micrometric and submicrometric contaminant particles from a solid ...
متن کاملEffect of Resistance Exercise and Vitamin C Intake on Expression of Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase and Telomere Repeat Binding Factor-2 Genes and the Diameter and Number of Myofibrils in Old Rats
Introduction: Cell aging is one of the most important and fundamental step in cellular behavior and reduces muscle mass and myofibrils. This study aims to investigate the effect of resistance exercise along with vitamin C consumption on the expression of Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase (TERT) and Telomere Repeat Binding Factor-2 (TRF2) genes and the diameter and number of skeletal muscle myofi...
متن کاملRaman Spectra of a PMMA Microstructured Optical Fibre and Direct Measurement of Its Gain Coefficient
A polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microstructured polymer optical fiber (mPOF) is fabricated and characterized. Using the cut-back technique the fiber loss is measured which is higher than the step-index silica fibers. Through a novel experimental scheme, the backward Stokes spectrum of the fabricated mPOF is recorded over a range exceeding 3000 cm‑1 during the cut-back method and compared ...
متن کاملInvestigation of the electrical properties and corrosion resistance of TiN coating deposited by reactive sputtering on the titanium bipolar plate, used in polymeric fuel cell
The effect of titanium nitride film on the properties of titanium bipolar plates used in polymeric fuel cell was investigated in this research. TiN coatings was deposited on the Ti-grade 1 substrate by using DC-sputtering method. Pure titanium was used as target and coating deposition was done in argon and nitrogen atmosphere. Different TiN thickness was developed by changing sputtering time. T...
متن کاملInsect adhesion on rough surfaces: analysis of adhesive contact of smooth and hairy pads on transparent microstructured substrates
Insect climbing footpads are able to adhere to rough surfaces, but the details of this capability are still unclear. To overcome experimental limitations of randomly rough, opaque surfaces, we fabricated transparent test substrates containing square arrays of 1.4 µm diameter pillars, with variable height (0.5 and 1.4 µm) and spacing (from 3 to 22 µm). Smooth pads of cockroaches (Nauphoeta ciner...
