چکیده

At temperatures below the metal–insulator transition of La1−xSrxMnO3 with 0.1 < x < 0.15, a peculiar ferromagnetic and insulating phase is observed which has been intensively discussed over the last few years. We present a detailed investigation of this phase by means of resonant and high energy x-ray scattering along with measurements of the electrical resistivity, thermal expansion, magnetization, and specific heat. Interestingly, the data show that the metal–insulator transition of lightly doped manganites is accompanied by an orbital rearrangement. The microscopic information provided by the x-ray scattering studies together with the analysis of the macroscopic properties implies that the orbital reordering maximizes the gain of double exchange energy and, at the same time, induces an insulating behaviour. The relevance of the double-exchange mechanism for the stabilization of the ferromagnetic insulating phase is further substantiated by studies of (La1−yPry)7/8Sr1/8MnO3: with increasing praseodymium content, the metal–insulator transition is dramatically suppressed which can naturally be explained by a reduction of the band width upon praseodymium doping. Two Ferromagnetic States in Magnetoresistive Manganites - First Order Transition Driven by Orbitals

A systematic study of the electronic structure in perovskite manganites is presented. The effective Hamiltonian is derived by taking into account the degeneracy of eg orbitals and strong electron correlation in Mn ions. The spin and orbital orderings are examined as functions of carrier concentration in the mean-field approximation applied to the effective Hamiltonian. We obtain the first order...

First order colossal magnetoresistance transitions in the two-orbital model for manganites.

Large-scale Monte Carlo simulation results for the two-orbital model for manganites, including Jahn-Teller lattice distortions, are presented here. At hole density x=1/4 and in the vicinity of the region of competition between the ferromagnetic metallic and spin-charge-orbital ordered insulating phases, the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) phenomenon is observed with a magnetoresistance ratio ∼...

Spin, orbital, and charge order at the interface between correlated oxides.

The collective behavior of correlated electrons in the VO2 interface layer of the LaVO(3)/SrTiO(3) heterostructure is studied within a quarter-filled t(2g)-orbital Hubbard model on a square lattice. We argue that the ground state is ferromagnetic, driven by the double-exchange mechanism, and is orbitally and charge ordered due to a confined geometry and electron correlations. The orbital and ch...

X-ray resonant scattering study of the incommensurate charge-orbital density wave in La2−2xSr1+2xMn2O7 (x = 0.7)

Orbital order has been proposed theoretically for more than half a century, and has subsequently been observed in a huge range of materials. Charge ordering is generally accompanied by a transition from a metal to an insulator. In manganites, colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) is associated with competition between charge and orbital antiferromagnetic insulating phases and ferromagnetic metallic ...

Phase Separation in Models for Manganites: Theoretical Aspects and Comparison with Experiments

Colossal magnetoresistance in metallic oxides such as R1−xXxMnO3 (where R = La, Pr,Nd; X = Sr,Ca,Ba,Pb) is attracting considerable attention [1] due to its potential technological applications. A variety of experiments have revealed that oxide manganites have a rich phase diagram [2] with regions of antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) order, as well as charge ordering, and a peculiar ...
