Efficient listening with two ears: Dichotic time compression and spatialization
نویسنده
چکیده
To increase the amount of information we can collect in a given amount of time, it is possible to employ signal processing techniques to speed up the rate at which recorded sounds are presented to the ears. Besides simply speeding up the playback, it is possible to auditorily display the signals in a way that allows us to process and interpret the signals more efficiently by exploiting the use of our two ears. This paper first reviews time compression techniques for increasing the amount of information that can be presented to a listener, with an emphasis on techniques that use two ears. The paper then describes a new technique that integrates these dichotic time compression techniques into a spatial audio display system.

Interaural asymmetries revealed by dichotic listening tests in normal and dyslexic children.
Normal and dyslexic right-handed children were assessed with three dichotic listening tests, the Dichotic Digits test, the Competing Words subtest of the SCAN, and the Dichotic Consonant-Vowel test. Performance was measured as both number and percentage of correct responses in the right and left ears. Laterality was defined as a simple difference in percentage between the two ears. Differences ...

Several auditory processing deficits have been reported in children with dyslexia. In order to assess for the presence of a binaural integration type of auditory processing deficit, dichotic listening tests with digits, words and consonant-vowel (CV) pairs were administered to two groups of right-handed 11-year-old children, one group diagnosed with developmental dyslexia and an age-matched con...

The electroencephalogram (EEG) reflects the electrical activity of the brain as recorded by placing several electrodes on the scalp. The EEG is widely used for diagnostic evaluation of various brain disorders such as determining the type and location of the activity observed during an epileptic seizure or for studying sleep disorders [1]. The dichotic listening (DL) paradigm is often used to as...
متن کاملFree and focused attention in young and aged listeners using randomized dichotic digits test
Background and Aim: Aging is associated with reduced cognitive abilities including attention and memory. There is some evidence that shows randomized dichotic digits test (RDDT) has enough difficulty to show the ear asymmetry in dichotic listening. This study aimed to compare the effect of free and focused attention on dichotic listening ability of young and elderly listeners. Methods: The cros...

1. Introduction Since Broadbent (1954) [1] first conducted a dichotic listening task by simultaneously presenting a pair of similar speech sounds at each ear, many aspects of dichotic listening have been studied, including Kimura's early interpretation from a neurological point of view [2]. In a dichotic listening task, a right-ear advantage is often observed, because language processing takes ...
