What is the relationship between groin pain in athletes and femoroacetabular impingement?

چکیده
Groin symptoms in athletes have been likened to the Bermuda Triangle as sports physicians, orthopaedists, surgeons and therapists alike are easily sucked into a sea of confusing suppositions and assump-tions. Possibly the greatest advance in the understanding and appreciation of ‘sports hernia’ has been the recent acknowledgment by a multidisciplinary panel of experts that there is in fact no hernia associated with the condition and they have coined the term ‘inguinal disruption’. Unfortunately, although the authors describe a constellation of symptoms, the label again suggests a localised pathology rather than a syndrome

Non-articular sources of groin pain in the athlete
Groin problems in sports can be multifactorial and often a team approach between orthopaedic, general surgeons is required for both diagnosis and treatment. Both clinical disciplines can be the first point of contact for athletes looking for medical advice. Good communication between the members of a medical team looking after an athlete is essential and is not helped by the use of confusing te...

Chronic groin pain in athletes represents a major diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in sports medicine. Two recognized causes of inguinal pain in the young adult athlete are core muscle injury/athletic pubalgia (CMI/AP) and femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). CMI/AP and FAI were previously considered to be two distinct entities; however, recent studies have suggested both entities to frequen...

INTRODUCTION: Athletic pubalgia, also known as sports hernia, is a common clinical presentation of localized groin pain, which can affect several locations including: adductor origin, inguinal region, acetabular/hip region and at the pubic symphysis [1]. Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI) has been suspected as a major cause of groin pain in athletes, but a clear linkage has yet to be establishe...
متن کاملPrevalence of radiological signs of femoroacetabular impingement in patients presenting with long-standing adductor-related groin pain.
OBJECTIVE A decreased range of motion (ROM) of the hip joint is known to predispose to athletic groin injury. Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) of the hip leads to a reduced ROM. This study examined the prevalence of radiological signs of FAI in patients presenting with long-standing adductor-related groin pain (LSARGP). DESIGN Prospective case series. SETTING Outpatient Sports Medicine De...
