چکیده

The modularity is a quality function in community detection, which was introduced by Newman and Girvan (2004). Community detection in graphs is now often conducted through modularity maximization: given an undirected graph G = (V,E), we are asked to find a partition C of V that maximizes the modularity. Although numerous algorithms have been developed to date, most of them have no theoretical approximation guarantee. Recently, to overcome this issue, the design of modularity maximization algorithms with provable approximation guarantees has attracted significant attention in the computer science community. In this study, we further investigate the approximability of modularity maximization. More specifically, we propose a polynomial-time ( cos ( 3− √ 5 4 π ) − 1+ √ 5 8 ) -additive approximation algorithm for the modularity maximization problem. Note here that cos ( 3− √ 5 4 π ) − 1+ √ 5 8 < 0.42084 holds. This improves the current best additive approximation error of 0.4672, which was recently provided by Dinh, Li, and Thai (2015). Interestingly, our analysis also demonstrates that the proposed algorithm obtains a nearly-optimal solution for any instance with a high modularity value. Moreover, we propose a polynomial-time 0.16598-additive approximation algorithm for the maximum modularity cut problem. It should be noted that this is the first non-trivial approximability result for the problem. Finally, we demonstrate that our approximation algorithm can be extended to some related problems. 1998 ACM Subject Classification G.2.2 [Graph Theory] Network Problems

Modularity-Maximizing Graph Communities via Mathematical Programming

In many networks, it is of great interest to identify communities, unusually densely knit groups of individuals. Such communities often shed light on the function of the networks or underlying properties of the individuals. Recently, Newman suggested modularity as a natural measure of the quality of a network partitioning into communities. Since then, various algorithms have been proposed for (...

Convexified Modularity Maximization for Degree-corrected Stochastic Block Models

The stochastic block model (SBM) is a popular framework for studying community detection in networks. This model is limited by the assumption that all nodes in the same community are statistically equivalent and have equal expected degrees. The degree-corrected stochastic block model (DCSBM) is a natural extension of SBM that allows for degree heterogeneity within communities. This paper propos...

Reducing Revenue to Welfare Maximization: Approximation Algorithms and Other Generalizations Citation

It was recently shown in [12] that revenue optimization can be computationally efficiently reduced to welfare optimization in all multi-dimensional Bayesian auction problems with arbitrary (possibly combinatorial) feasibility constraints and independent additive bidders with arbitrary (possibly combinatorial) demand constraints. This reduction provides a poly-time solution to the optimal mechan...

Finding Community Structure with Performance Guarantees in Complex Networks

Many networks including social networks, computer networks, and biological networks are found to divide naturally into communities of densely connected individuals. Finding community structure is one of fundamental problems in network science. Since Newman’s suggestion of using modularity as a measure to qualify the goodness of community structures, many efficient methods to maximize modularity...

A Comparison of Agglomerative Hierarchical Algorithms for Modularity Clustering

Modularity is a popular measure for the quality of a cluster partition. Primarily, its popularity originates from its suitability for community identification through maximization. A lot of algorithms to maximize modularity have been proposed in recent years. Especially agglomerative hierarchical algorithms showed to be fast and find clusterings with high modularity. In this paper we present se...
