A method for estimating rain rate and drop size distribution from polarimetric radar measurements

چکیده
Polarimetric radar measurements are sensitive to the size, shape and orientation of raindrops and provide information about drop size distribution (DSD), canting angle distribution and rain rate. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a method for retrieving DSD parameters for calculating rain rate and the characteristic particle size. The DSD is assumed to be a Gamma distribution and the governing parameters are retrieved from radar measurements: reflectivity ( ), differential reflectivity ( ), and a constrained relation between the shape ( ) and slope ( ) parameters derived from video disdrometer observations. The estimated rain rate is compared with that obtained from more traditional methods and the calculated characteristic size is compared with the measured values. The calculated based on the retrieved Gamma DSD is also compared with measurements. The proposed method shows improvement over the existing models and techniques because it can retrieve all three parameters of the Gamma distribution. For maintaining the continuity of earlier published results, raindrop shape is assumed to be equilibrium.

P2b.1 Constrained Gamma Drop Size Model for Polarimetric Radar Rain Estimation: Justification and Development
Accurate rain estimation from radar measurements has been a difficult task due to the variation of raindrop size distribution (DSD), lack of accurate axis ratio model, measurement error, clutter, and so forth. Previously, rain estimation from weather radars has been largely dependent upon empirical relations such as R-Z relations. The development of polarimetric radar makes accurate rain DSD re...
متن کاملSimulation of polarimetric radar variables in rain at S-, C- and X-band wavelengths
Polarimetric radar variables of rainfall events, like differential reflectivity ZDR, or specific differential phase KDP, are better suited for estimating rain rate R than just the reflectivity factor for horizontally polarized waves, ZH. A variety of physical and empirical approaches exist to estimate the rain rate from polarimetric radar observables. The relationships vary over a wide range wi...
متن کاملRain microstructure retrievals using 2-D video disdrometer and C-band polarimetric radar
Measurements using the 2-D video disdrometer (2DVD) taken during a heavy rainfall event in Huntsville, Alabama, are analysed. The 2DVD images were processed to derive the rain microstructure parameters for each individual drop, which in turn were used as input to the T-matrix method to compute the forward and back scatter amplitudes of each drop at C-band. The polarimetric radar variables were ...
متن کاملPolarimetric Radar Estimators Based on a Constrained Gamma Drop Size Distribution Model
Raindrop size distribution (DSD) retrieval from remote radar measurements or from in situ disdrometer measurements is an important area of research. If the shape ( ) and slope ( ) of a three-parameter gamma distribution n(D) N0D exp( D ) are related to one another, as recent disdrometer measurements suggest, the gamma DSD model is simplified to a two-parameter DSD, that is, a constrained gamma ...
متن کاملEffects of Radar Beam Shielding on Rainfall Estimation for the Polarimetric C-Band Radar
Radar reflectivity (Zh), differential reflectivity (Zdr), and specific differential phase (Kdp) measured from the operational, polarimetric weather radar located in Trappes, France, were used to examine the effects of radar beam shielding on rainfall estimation. The objective of this study is to investigate the degree of immunity of Kdp-based rainfall estimates to beam shielding for C-band rada...
