Flying Insect Inspired Vision for Micro-Air-Vehicle Navigation
نویسنده
چکیده
More often homeland security, disaster mitigation and military operations are performed in urban environments. Time consuming, labor intensive and possibly dangerous tasks like bomb detection, search-and-rescue and reconnaissance done with robots could save resources. An aerial robot capable of flying in closed quarters like warehouses, stadiums, underground parking lots and tunnels is featured. The working prototype can fly slowly, safely and transmit wireless video for situational awareness. The design is analytic and employs a multidisciplinary design optimization to formulate the integration of aerodynamics, sensor suite and task performance.

Bio-Inspired Vision-Based Leader-Follower Formation Flying in the Presence of Delays
Flocking starlings at dusk are known for the mesmerizing and intricate shapes they generate, as well as how fluid these shapes change. They seem to do this effortlessly. Real-life vision-based flocking has not been achieved in micro-UAVs (micro Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) to date. Towards this goal, we make three contributions in this paper: (i) we used a computational approach to develop a bio-i...
متن کاملInsect-Inspired Visual Navigation for Flying Robots
This paper discusses the implementation of insect-inspired visual navigation strategies in flying robots, in particular focusing on the impact of changing height. We start by assessing the information available at different heights for visual homing in natural environments, comparing results from an open environment against one where trees and bushes are closer to the camera. We then test a rou...
متن کاملInsect Inspired Robots
Insect behaviour has been a rich source of inspiration for the field of robotics as the perception and navigation problems encountered by autonomous robots are faced also by insects. In this paper, we introduce a research platform, the Insectbot, that was built as a testbed for new biologically-inspired, vision-based algorithms and systems. The Insectbot is a groundbased robot but it is capable...
متن کاملRecent Progress Towards Developing an Insect-Inspired Flapping-Wing Micro Air Vehicle
This paper presents an overview of the on-going research activities at Shrivenham, aimed at the design of an autonomous flapping-wing micro air vehicle. After introducing the problem of insect wing kinematics and aerodynamics, we describe our quasi-three-dimensional aerodynamic model for flapping wings. This is followed by a brief discussion of some aerodynamic issues relating to the lift-gener...
متن کاملThree Dimensional Computer Vision for Micro Air Vehicles
Results are described of an ongoing project whose goal is to provide advanced Computer Vision for small low flying autonomous aircraft. The work consists of two parts; range-based vision for object recognition and pose estimation, and monocular vision for navigation and collision avoidance. A wide variety of range imaging methods were considered for the former, and it was found that a promising...
