Scientific field training for human planetary exploration
نویسندگان
چکیده
Forthcoming human planetary exploration will require increased scientific return (both in real time and post-mission), longer surface stays, greater geographical coverage, longer and more frequent EVAs, and more operational complexities than during the Apollo missions. As such, there is a need to shift the nature of astronauts’ scientific capabilities to something akin to an experienced terrestrial field scientist. To achieve this aim, the authors present a case that astronaut training should include an Apollo-style curriculum based on traditional field school experiences, as well as full immersion in field science programs. Herein we propose four Learning Design Principles (LDPs) focused on optimizing astronaut learning in field science settings. The LDPs are as follows: (1) LDP#1: Provide multiple experiences: varied field science activities will hone astronauts’ abilities to adapt to novel scientific opportunities (2) LDP#2: Focus on the learner: fostering intrinsic motivation will orient astronauts towards continuous informal learning and a quest for mastery (3) LDP#3: Provide a relevant experience—the field site: field sites that share features with future planetary missions will increase the likelihood that astronauts will successfully transfer learning (4) LDP#4: Provide a social learning experience—the field science team and their activities: ensuring the field team includes members of varying levels of experience engaged in opportunities for discourse and joint problem solving will facilitate astronauts’ abilities to think and perform like a

An Antarctic research outpost as a model for planetary exploration.
During the next 50 years, human civilization may well begin expanding into the solar system. This colonization of extraterrestrial bodies will most likely begin with the establishment of small research outposts on the Moon and/or Mars. In all probability these facilities, designed primarily for conducting exploration and basic science, will have international participation in their crews, log...
متن کاملSurface Exploration Metrics of a Long Duration Polar Analogue Study: Implications for Future Moon and Mars Missions
To prepare for the return of humans to the Moon by 2020 and the eventual human exploration of Mars, it is important to gain a better understanding of the logistical requirements for living, working, and exploring on the surface of another planet. Given humanity’s limited experience with human planetary surface research (i.e., the Apollo missions), high fidelity simulations in analogue environme...
متن کاملDrilling Automation for Subsurface Planetary Exploration
Future in-situ lunar/martian resource utilization and characterization, as well as the scientific search for life on Mars, will require access to the subsurface and hence drilling. Drilling on Earth is hard – an art form more than an engineering discipline. The limited mass, energy and manpower in planetary drilling situations makes application of terrestrial drilling techniques problematic. Th...

During the last decade, there has been significant progress toward a supervised autonomous robotic capability for remotely controlled scientific exploration of planetary surfaces. While planetary exploration potentially encompasses many elements ranging from orbital remote sensing to subsurface drilling, the surface robotics element is particularly important to advancing in situ science objecti...
متن کاملPart 3: Robotic Rovers for Planetary Exploration
The exploration of the planets and other bodies of our solar system is one of the most exciting aspects of 21 century science. Indeed, the recent emphasis placed on the search for life elsewhere in our solar system and beyond by a number of space agencies has made this venture of philosophical import. In particular, eyes have focussed on Mars, partly due to the astrobiological question of wheth...
